Profanatica is an American black metal band formed in 1990. They are known for their blasphemous image, provocative live shows, and raw, primitive sound. They are considered one of the pioneers of American black metal. Their lyrics deal with anti-religious and satanic themes, and their visual aesthetic is often extreme. Their discography includes six full-length albums and numerous smaller releases. This year saw the release of a new EP, which will be the subject of the following review.
Profanatica returns with a short yet fiercely intense EP, 'Wreathed in Dead Angels’, which perfectly captures the essence of what defines their work: filth, blasphemy, and an uncompromising hatred for anything sacred. Although the material runs just over twenty-one minutes, it is more than enough to remind us who has been stoking the infernal flames of American black metal for over three decades. The production is extremely raw, even crude, but this is entirely intentional. The guitars scrape like rusted wire, the drums grind and slash without mercy, and the vocals resemble a blasphemous litany shouted by a priest consumed by madness. The tracks feel less like composed music and more like vomit expelled from underground crypts, which is precisely their strength. Compared to earlier releases, 'Wreathed in Dead Angels’ brings no major changes, but it doesn’t need to. Profanatica has no interest in stylistic evolution. Their music is a deliberate stagnation in a festering, repulsive form that still hits with full force. This recording doesn’t try to win anyone over or extend an invitation. It repels and alienates, leaving space only for those who seek the farthest reaches of extremity. This is not a statement. It is a spit in the face. For devotees of extreme noise, an absolute necessity.

Profanatica to amerykański zespół black metalowy założony w 1990 roku. Znani są z bluźnierczego wizerunku, prowokacyjnych koncertów i surowego, prymitywnego brzmienia. Są jednymi z pionierów amerykańskiego black metalu. Ich teksty poruszają tematy antyreligijne i satanistyczne, a oprawa graficzna bywa ekstremalna. W ich dyskografii znajdziemy sześć albumów i liczne mniejsze wydawnictwa. W tym roku ukazał się minialbum i to właśnie ten materiał będzie przedmiotem niniejszej recenzji.
Profanatica wraca z krótką, lecz niezwykle intensywną EP-ką Wreathed in Dead Angels, która znakomicie oddaje esencję tego, co w ich twórczości najbardziej charakterystyczne: brud, bluźnierstwo i bezwarunkową nienawiść wobec wszelkiej świętości. Choć materiał trwa ponad dwadzieścia jeden minut, to wystarczy, by raz jeszcze przypomnieć, kto od ponad trzydziestu lat rozpala piekielny ogień w amerykańskim black metalu. Brzmienie jest skrajnie surowe, wręcz ordynarne w realizacji, ale to celowy zabieg. Gitary szarpią niczym pordzewiały drut, perkusja zgrzyta i tnie bez chwili wytchnienia, a wokale przypominają bluźnierczą litanię wykrzykiwaną przez kapłana ogarniętego obłędem. Utwory sprawiają wrażenie wymiotów zrodzonych w katakumbach, a nie przemyślanych struktur muzycznych – i to jest ich siłą. Na tle wcześniejszych wydawnictw 'Wreathed in Dead Angels’ nie wnosi większych zmian, ale też nie ma takiej potrzeby. Profanatica nie dąży do stylistycznego postępu. Ich muzyka to świadome tkwienie w gnijącej, obrzydliwej formule, która wciąż pozostaje skuteczna. Ten materiał nie próbuje nikogo przekonywać ani zapraszać – raczej odrzuca i zniechęca, pozostawiając miejsce wyłącznie dla tych, którzy poszukują granic ekstremy. To nie manifest. To splunięcie w twarz. Dla wyznawców ekstremalnego hałasu – absolutna konieczność.
