Defacement is an international black/death metal band formed in 2019. The group consists of musicians from the Netherlands, Italy, and Libya. Their music blends the aggression and brutality of death metal with the atmospheric sound typical of black metal. To date, they have released three albums, with a fourth one announced for release in August this year. The following section contains a review of their 2024 album 'Duality’.
On their third album, Defacement once again plunges into the depths of extreme metal, delivering material that is intense, cohesive, and hypnotic. 'Duality’ is a release that balances brutality with atmosphere, where black and death metal intertwine with surprising ease. Dissonant, tension-filled riffs, unsettling melodies, and a seemingly chaotic yet clearly deliberate song structure create a constant sense of unease and pressure. The production is dense, raw, and organic, avoiding excessive polish while maintaining clarity and definition. Vocal outbursts and percussive ferocity give the album an uncompromising character, yet the band does not shy away from space—ambient passages enhance the feeling of emptiness and existential dread. Duality is a conscious and emotionally charged journey into darkness. Demanding, but rewarding for the attentive listener who seeks more than just direct aggression.

Zespół Defacement to międzynarodowa formacja grająca black/death metal, założona w 2019 roku. Tworzą ją muzycy z Holandii, Włoch i Libii. Ich muzyka łączy agresję i brutalność death metalu z atmosferycznym brzmieniem charakterystycznym dla black metalu. Wydali do tej pory trzy albumy, a czwarty zapowiedziany został na sierpień tego roku. W poniższej części znajduje się recenzja, która dotyczy albumu 'Duality’ z 2024 roku.
Na swoim trzecim albumie Defacement ponownie zanurza się w czeluściach ekstremalnego metalu, serwując materiał intensywny, spójny i hipnotyzujący. 'Duality’ to wydawnictwo balansujące między brutalnością a atmosferycznością, gdzie black i death metal przeplatają się z zadziwiającą lekkością. Dysonansowe, pełne napięcia riffy, niepokojące melodie oraz pozornie chaotyczna, lecz wyraźnie przemyślana struktura kompozycji budują ciągłe poczucie napięcia i niepokoju. Produkcja jest gęsta, surowa i organiczna – unikając nadmiernego wygładzenia, zachowuje jednak przejrzystość i klarowność brzmienia. Wokalne ekspresje i perkusyjna dzikość nadają całości bezkompromisowy charakter, lecz zespół nie stroni od przestrzeni – ambientowe fragmenty wzmacniają poczucie pustki i egzystencjalnego lęku. 'Duality’ to świadoma i emocjonalnie intensywna wyprawa w mrok. Wymagająca, ale nagradzająca uważnego słuchacza, który szuka czegoś więcej niż tylko bezpośredniej agresji.
