Ashen Tomb is a Finnish death metal band from Helsinki, formed in 2021. The group quickly gained recognition for its uncompromising and raw sound, inspired by the classic death metal of the 1990s and drawing from the legacy of genre icons such as Autopsy and Incantation. The lineup consists of five seasoned musicians who are also active in other projects within the extreme music scene. The band’s discography includes three singles, a mini-album, a split release with Sepulchral Curse, and one full-length album. In the following part of the text, you will find a review of their debut EP from 2022, which was originally released on cassette by the Polish label Godz ov War Productions, with a CD version issued a year later by Personal Records.
The debut EP by Finnish band Ashen Tomb is a powerful strike for fans of classic, sepulchral death metal. The three tracks on this barely fourteen-minute release pay homage to the American and Scandinavian schools of the 1990s. Echoes of Autopsy, Incantation, and even a touch of Bolt Thrower can be heard throughout. The sound is dense, abrasive, and organic, perfectly capturing an atmosphere of decay and hopelessness. The guitar carves out heavy, slow-moving riffs that intertwine with bursts of chaos and brutality. The drums are massive yet restrained, well balanced in the mix. The vocals are a deep growl reminiscent of the early days of brutal death metal without studio trickery. Ashen Tomb does not strive for originality but compensates with authenticity and a deep dedication to the spirit of the genre. The production is intentionally raw, with no excessive polish, which only adds to the overall weight. This is a release for those who value death metal in its most primitive, rotting form. No compromises, no embellishments, just pure, lethal force.

Ashen Tomb to fiński zespół death metalowy wywodzący się z Helsinek, powstały w 2021 roku. Grupa szybko zyskała uznanie dzięki bezkompromisowemu, surowemu brzmieniu inspirowanemu klasycznym death metalem lat 90., czerpiąc z dorobku takich ikon gatunku jak Autopsy czy Incantation. W skład formacji wchodzi pięciu doświadczonych muzyków, aktywnych również w innych projektach sceny ekstremalnej. Dorobek zespołu obejmuje trzy single, minialbum, split z Sepulchral Curse oraz pełnowymiarowy album. W dalszej części tekstu znajduje się recenzja debiutanckiej EP-ki z 2022 roku, która pierwotnie ukazała się na kasecie nakładem polskiej wytwórni Godz ov War Productions, a jej wersja CD została wydana rok później przez Personal Records.

Trzy utwory zawarte na tym niespełna czternastominutowym materiale to ukłon w stronę amerykańskiej i skandynawskiej szkoły lat 90. Słychać tu echa Autopsy, Incantation, a nawet szczyptę Bolt Thrower. Brzmienie jest gęste, szorstkie i organiczne, idealnie oddające atmosferę rozkładu i beznadziei. Gitara rzeźbi ciężkie, wolno sunące riffy, które przeplatają się z przyspieszeniami pełnymi chaosu i brutalności. Perkusja jest masywna, ale nieprzesadzona, dobrze osadzona w miksie. Wokal to głęboki growl, przywodzący na myśl dawne czasy brutalnego death metalu bez studyjnych sztuczek. Ashen Tomb nie sili się na oryginalność, ale nadrabia autentycznością i oddaniem duchowi gatunku. Produkcja jest celowo surowa, bez przesadnego poleru, co tylko dodaje całości ciężaru. To materiał dla tych, którzy cenią death metal w jego najbardziej pierwotnej, gnijącej formie. Bez kompromisów, bez ozdobników, tylko czysta, śmiercionośna siła.
