IDOLATRY – Visions from the Throne of Eyes

Hailing from Canada, Idolatry was formed in 2014. It must be said that the horde hasn’t been idle, as they already have four releases to their name. In addition to the debut album discussed here, they can boast two splits, one with Unrest and another with Kult ov Azazel, a demo, and one EP. That should suffice as an introduction. Oh, and after recording this album, the vocalist Lörd Matzigkeitus left the band. You might know him from the newly formed Thy Sepulchral Moon. By the way, if you haven’t checked them out yet, it’s definitely worth doing so. But back to the Canadian beast, below are a few words about their first album.
Idolatry moves within the field of Black Metal, without unnecessary quirks, progressive approaches or other needless experiments. Stylistically, their music reminded me of the Finnish scene, both vocally and in the arrangement of individual tracks. The vocals often reach very high, almost screeching and piercing registers. If you play something by Nekrokrist SS, Sielunvihollinen or Impious Havoc, it will all become clear. There are also more typical vocals, as well as semi-spoken parts and high-pitched howls. And nothing clashes here, everything is perfectly matched to each part of the track. The compositions are largely seasoned with very sharp, maybe even slightly catchy melodicism. In its raw sound, it works very well with the riffs being played. The rhythm section stands out clearly above the guitars. Both bass and drums are recorded selectively in the studio, which means the album’s dynamics do not suffer at all. My weakness lies exactly in this — when the bass is brought forward and clearly audible, I love being whipped by yet another furious portion of wickedness oozing from the speakers. Oh right, I forgot to mention at the beginning that the album opens with an intro dripping with suffering. Played entirely on guitar without effects, with a rasping monologue, while in the background toward the end you can hear agonizing sobs. A very good introduction, especially since the next track fully outlines the kind of Black Metal we are dealing with. Possession, completely dry wickedness, filth and raw darkness. Even though it lacks a tomb-like aura or a wall of sound, this material is damn engaging and hits you in the face with double the force of authenticity. With each track I became more convinced that Idolatry spits out its poison as naturally as a snake does when making deadly attacks on its prey. It paralyzes with venom, and in the final convulsions delivers more horror of the inevitable. This open passion that can be sensed in tracks like Visions from the Throne of Eyes, and above all the maturity of the compositions (presenting simplicity and rawness in an interesting way is a real challenge), allows me to say that there’s a future for Idolatry. It’s more than good — with flair and the total darkness that floods the mind while listening to this album. Worth owning.

Pochodzący z Kanady Idolatry został założony w 2014 roku. Trzeba przyznać, że horda nie próżnuje bowiem ma na swoim koncie już cztery wydawnictwa. Poza omawianym debiutem albumowym mogą się pochwalić dwoma splitami kolejno z Unrest i Kult ov Azazel, demo oraz jedną EPką. To chyba tyle gwoli wstępu. Aha, po nagraniu tego albumu z zespołu odszedł wokalista Lörd Matzigkeitus, którego możecie znać z nowo powstałego Thy Sepulchral Moon. Przy okazji, jeśli nie znacie to warto ich sprawdzić. Wracając jednak do Kanadyjskiej bestii, poniżej słów kilka na temat ich pierwszego albumu.
Idolatry porusza się na polu Black Metalu, bez zbędnych udziwnień, rozwojowego podejścia czy innych niepotrzebnych eksperymentów. Stylistycznie ich muzyka skojarzyła mi się z Fińską sceną, zarówno wokalnie jak i w aranżacjach poszczególnych utworów. Wokale dość często schodzą do bardzo wysokich, wręcz skrzecząco-piskliwych partii. Zresztą jeśli uruchomicie sobie materiały takiego Nekrokrist SS, Sielunvihollinen czy Impious Havoc to wszystko stanie się jasne. Występują również wokale bardziej typowe ale też na wpół mówione oraz wyjące wysokie partie. I nic się ze sobą nie kłóci, dopasowane jest perfekcyjnie do danego fragmentu utworu. Kompozycje w dużej mierze są okraszone bardzo ostrą, może nawet i trochę przebojową melodyjnością. W swym surowym brzmieniu bardzo dobrze to współgra z granymi riffami. Ponad gitary wybija się bardzo dobrze sesja rytmiczna. Zarówno bas jaki i perkusja są selektywnie zarejestrowane w studio dzięki czemu dynamika albumu nie kuleje ani trochę. Moja słabość właśnie na tym polega, że poprzez wysunięcie dobrze słyszalnego basu uwielbiam być wręcz chłostany kolejnymi wściekłymi partiami niegodziwości jaka sączy się z głośników. A właśnie, zapomniałem wspomnieć na początku, że album otwiera przeciekające cierpieniem intro. Odegrane w całości na gitarze bez efektu, ze skrzeczącym monologiem gdy w tle pod koniec pojawiają się agonalne szlochy. Bardzo dobry wstęp, tym bardziej że kolejny utwór nakreśla w pełni przekrój z jakim Black Metalem będziemy mieli do czynienia. Opętanie, kompletnie oschła nikczemność, brud i surowa ciemność. Pomimo, że pozbawiony grobowej aury by nie wspomnieć o gruzie dźwiękowym, materiał ten jest cholernie zajmujący i uderza po pysku zdwojoną mocą autentyczności. Z każdym utworem nabierałem przekonania, że Idolatry wypluwa swą truciznę tak naturalnie jak czyni to wąż przy śmiertelnych atakach na swoje ofiary. Paraliżuje jadem, dozuje przy ostatnich konwulsjach kolejną grozę nieuniknionego. Ta właśnie niekryta pasja jaką można wychwycić z kolejnych utworów 'Visions from the Throne of Eyes’ oraz przede wszystkim dojrzałość kompozycji (prostota i surowizna zaprezentowana w sposób interesujący to duże wyzwanie), pozwala stwierdzić, że z Idolatry będą ludzie. Jest nader dobrze, z polotem i totalnym mrokiem który zalewa myśli podczas obcowania z tym albumem. Warto nabyć.
