Active since 1998, the Polish one-man project led by Grimspirit released its fifth album in mid-December 2017. However, before EVILFEAST was born one winter night, the horde operated under the name Darkfeast for two years, starting in 1996. This year marks exactly twenty years of activity under its current name, and Elegies of the Stellar Wind is a very fitting way to reaffirm its position in the underground scene. To be honest, I personally can’t recall any weak points in the discography of this project from Otwock – every full-length release, both demos, and the excellent EP Invoking the Ancient are strong entries in Grimspirit’s catalog. The latest album is no exception to the previous masterpieces, and fans of Atmospheric Black Metal can prepare themselves for another rich feast.
The six tracks featured on this release span nearly seventy minutes. Those of you familiar with EVILFEAST’s work have likely grown accustomed to such lengthy compositions. Moreover, the atmosphere crafted on this album justifies such expansiveness—it captivates the listener, transporting them to a land of eternal winter. From the very first sounds of The Second Baptism… Shores in Fire and Ice, the slowly seeping music fills my room with cold, and I find myself face-to-face with the majesty of Nature’s power and the omnipotence of true Evil. The landscapes conjured by Grimspirit strike to the core—they become tangible, real. Raw guitars play simple riffs, forming a backdrop for vocals and keys, yet merging seamlessly into a unified whole. What enchanted me about this album is that, despite the passage of time, EVILFEAST continues to do what it always has—delving ever deeper into frostbitten realms, beautifully entwined with a touch of melancholy. The sheer variety of sounds presented in Elegies of the Stellar Wind strokes my ego. Why? Because while I may lean more toward traditional raw black metal, when confronted with such sheer power, it’s impossible not to feel something. Distorted guitars, acoustic guitars, vast swathes of keyboards, the clash of weapons, samples of wind, fire, the hooting of an owl, and other sounds of nature—all ruled over by a terrifying chill. Particularly stunning are the passages where the „metal” instrumentation falls silent, and only the keyboard arrangements remain. Fucking powerful! On one hand, it’s majestically grand, and on the other, with every new note, I feel icy gusts of wind and the crunch of snow beneath my boots. As with previous releases, EVILFEAST navigates both very fast, blast-beat-driven parts, as well as slower and mid-tempo sections. The only new element I don’t recall from earlier works are the clean vocals, which further emphasize the vastness and grandeur of this music. These almost 70 minutes pass by incredibly quickly. I find myself pressing the “play” button again. Slowly, the gray dawn creeps in through the window. With great reluctance, I head off to rest, ending this cold feast. EVILFEAST will keep playing, severing me from the fucking reality, and I will slowly drift into sleep. But before that happens, let me say once more how powerful this album is. An absolute must!

Aktywny od 1998 roku, polski jednoosobowy projekt dowodzony przez Grimspirit’a, wydał swój już piąty album w połowie grudnia 2017 roku. Zanim jednak pewnej zimowej nocy narodził się EVILFEAST, przez dwa lata od 1996 roku horda funkcjonowała pod nazwą Darkfeast. Tego roku wybija równe dwadzieścia lat działalności pod obecna nazwą, a 'Ellegies of the Stellar Wind’ to bardzo dobry sposób na podkreslenie swojej pozycji w podziemiu. Szczerze powiedziawszy, osobiście nie mogę sobie przypomnieć słabszych punktów w dyskografii Otwockiego projektu – każde pełne wydawnictwo, oba dema i jakże wspaniała Ep’ka 'Invoking the Ancient’ to potężne punkty wydawnicze Grimspirit’a. Najnowszy album nie obiega od poprzednich majstersztyków, a zwolennicy Atmosferycznego Black Metalu mogą być gotowi na kolejną sutą ucztę.
Sześć utworów, które znalazły się na tym materiale trwa blisko siedemdziesiąt minut. Ci z was, którzy znają twórczość EVILFEAST zdążyli się już zapewne przyzwyczaić to takich obszernych czasowo aranżacji. Ponadto atmosfera wykreowana na albumie sprzyja takiej rozwiązłości czasowej, porywa słuchacza przenosząc go w krainę wiecznej zimy. Już od pierwszych dźwięków 'The Second Baptism… Shores in Fire and Ice’ sącząca się powolnie muzyka zalega chłodem w moim pokoju i staję w obliczu majestatu potęgi Natury i omnipotencji prawdziwego Zła. Krajobrazy wykreowane przez Grimspirit’a uderzają w sedno, stają się namacalne i rzeczywiste. Surowe gitary, grające proste riffy tworząc tło dla wokali i klawiszy, a jednocześnie łącząc się w jedną całość. Urzekło mnie w tym albumie, że pomimo upływu czasu, EVILFEAST dalej robi to co robił, brnąc w coraz to bardziej mroźne klimaty zachwycająco połączone z pewną dozą melancholii. Ogrom różnych dźwięków na jakie jesteśmy wystawieni słuchając 'Elegies of the Stellar Wind’ łechcze moje ego. Czemu? Bo może i skłaniam się bardziej ku tradycyjnemu surowemu graniu, ale bedąc postawionym w obliczu takiej potęgi nie można odmówić sobie emocji. Gitary przesterowane, gitary akustyczne, ogrom klawiszy, szczęk oręża, sample wiatrów, ognia, huczącej sowy i inne odgłosy natury – a nad wszystkim panuje przeraźliwy ziąb. W szczególności niesamowite są fragmenty gdy milknie 'metalowe’ instrumentarium i słyszymy wyłącznie pasaże klawiszy. Pieprzona potęga! Z jednej strony mocno majestatyczne, okazałe a z drugiej z każdym pojawiającym się dźwiękiem czuję lodowate podmuchy wichru i skrzypienie śniegu pod butami. Tak jak w przypadku poprzednich materiałów, EVILFEAST brnie zarówno w bardzo szybkie blastujące partie, ale mamy też wolne / średnie partie. Jedyną nowością, której nie kojarzę z innych wydawnictw są czyste wokale, które jeszcze bardziej podkreślają bezmiar i podniosłość tej muzyki. Te niecałe 70 minut mija bardzo szybko. Łapię się na tym, że wciskam ponownie przycisk 'play’ na odtwarzaczu. Powoli za oknem pojawia się szaruga wstającego dnia. Z dużym żalem udaję się na odpoczynek przerywając chłodną ucztę. EVILFEAST jeszcze będzie grał odcinając mnie od pieprzonej rzeczywistości, a ja powoli zapadnę w sen. Zanim to jednak nastąpi, raz jeszcze wspomnę jak bardzo potężny to album. Absolutny mus!
