Expunged is a death metal band from Ottawa, Canada, formed in 2019. Their work is a deliberate homage to the raw, primitive sound of the 1990s, drawing heavily from the legacy of Swedish genre titans such as Dismember, Grave, and Entombed. Complementing this foundation are massive, warlike riffs in the vein of Bolt Thrower, adding an extra layer of heaviness to their music. According to available information, the band has been inactive since 2023, with no signs of new releases or live performances. Their discography includes two full-length albums and several smaller releases, including a debut mini-album. Today’s review will focus on their second and most recent LP, which serves as a culmination of the band’s work to date.

’Visions of Agony’ was released by CDN Records in March 2023 and marks the second full-length offering from Canadian band Expunged. Known until now for their uncompromising approach to old-school death metal, deeply rooted in the legacy of the Swedish scene, this time the band expands their stylistic palette with clear influences from grindcore and hardcore punk. The result is a fierce, angry, and energetic record that assaults the listener from the very first moments, offering no time to catch a breath. The sound that pours from the speakers hits with the band’s trademark gritty guitar tone, which quickly transitions into more chaotic and aggressive structures reminiscent of classic grindcore. Expunged to pochodzący z Ottawy kanadyjski zespół wykonujący death metal, powstały w 2019 roku. Ich twórczość stanowi świadome nawiązanie do klasycznego, prymitywnego brzmienia lat 90., wyraźnie czerpiąc z dorobku szwedzkich tuzów gatunku, takich jak Dismember, Grave czy Entombed. Uzupełnieniem tego fundamentu są masywne, wojenne riffy w stylu Bolt Thrower, które nadają ich muzyce dodatkową ciężkość. Z dostępnych informacji wynika, że od 2023 roku formacja pozostaje w stanie zawieszenia i nie przejawia aktywności wydawniczej ani koncertowej. W ich dorobku znajdują się dwa pełnowymiarowe albumy oraz kilka pomniejszych wydawnictw, w tym debiutancki mini-album. Dzisiejsza recenzja skupi się na ich drugim, ostatnim jak dotąd longplayu, który stanowi podsumowanie dotychczasowej działalności zespołu.

’Visions of Agony’ ukazał się nakładem wytwórni CDN Records w marcu 2023 roku i stanowi drugie pełnowymiarowe wydawnictwo w dorobku kanadyjskiego Expunged. Zespół, do tej pory znany z bezkompromisowego podejścia do oldschoolowego death metalu inspirowanego klasykami szwedzkiej sceny, tym razem zdecydował się poszerzyć paletę stylistyczną o wpływy grindcore’u oraz hardcore punku. Efektem jest intensywny, gniewny i żywiołowy materiał, który od samego początku atakuje słuchacza bez chwili oddechu. Dźwięki wydobywające się z głośników uderzają charakterystycznym dla zespołu brudem gitarowym, który momentalnie przechodzi w bardziej rozedrgane, agresywne struktury, przywodzące na myśl klasykę grindcore’u. Słychać też echa pierwotnego metalu oraz pulsujące punkowe rytmy, które dodają kompozycjom werwy i melodyjnego pazura. Partie gitarowe są masywne i ciężkie, wręcz miażdżące, natomiast perkusja wnosi potężną dawkę intensywności i tempa. Wokal utrzymany jest w chropowatym, brutalnym stylu – agresywny, ale zarazem na tyle czytelny, by nie gubić przekazu. Doskonale współgra z całością, dopełniając prymitywnego, nieoczyszczonego charakteru materiału. Na album składa się dziesięć utworów o łącznym czasie trwania trzydziestu ośmiu minut. Produkcja została utrzymana w surowej estetyce, typowej dla undergroundowego grania – dźwięk jest brudny, ale zarazem czytelny, co pozwala na uchwycenie pracy każdego instrumentu. Choć 'Visions of Agony’ nie zmienia zasad gry w death metalu, stanowi ciekawą próbę odświeżenia klasycznej formuły, bez utraty jej brutalnego ducha. To pozycja, która bez wątpienia przypadnie do gustu fanom ekstremalnych brzmień, a szczególnie tym, którzy cenią sobie dzikość, szczerość i brak zbędnych ozdobników. Album zdecydowanie wart przesłuchania.
