The Finnish death metal outfit Malformed was formed in Helsinki in 2022, quickly making a mark on the local extreme metal scene. The band’s discography consists of three releases, each showcasing a different facet of their musical identity. Their debut demo was the first clear sign of their potential – raw, aggressive, and technically proficient. The next step was a live recording from their performance on March 17, 2023, captured at the Tiivistämö venue in Helsinki, which highlighted the intensity of their stage presence. The group’s latest and most mature effort to date is the EP 'The Gathering of Souls’, a distilled representation of their artistic direction – intense, uncompromising death metal. It is this very release that will be the subject of today’s review.
Malformed made a striking entrance onto the death metal scene, and their EP 'The Gathering of Souls’ proves that within the realm of extreme music, there’s still room for fresh ideas without abandoning the traditional pillars of the genre. The release features four tracks that skillfully blend technical sophistication with a raw brutality reminiscent of early recordings by bands like Suffocation, Cryptopsy, and Gorguts. The guitar work is sharp and uncompromising, yet rich in detail – riffs flow seamlessly from one to the next without losing their weight. The rhythm section is a true powerhouse – the drumming bursts with energy, while the bass provides a solid backbone without overindulgence. The vocals deliver a deep, demonic growl that perfectly complements the sonic onslaught. The production is gritty yet clear, striking an excellent balance between filth and definition. Though short in runtime, the EP offers a focused, potent dose of death metal that pays homage to tradition while embracing modernity. 'The Gathering of Souls’ is a bold statement of intent from the band. I eagerly await their future releases and wholeheartedly recommend checking out this record.

Fińska formacja death metalowa Malformed narodziła się w Helsinkach w 2022 roku, błyskawicznie zaznaczając swoją obecność na rodzimej scenie ekstremalnego metalu. W dorobku artystycznym zespołu znajdują się trzy wydawnictwa, prezentujące różne oblicza ich twórczości. Debiutancki materiał demo stanowił pierwszy sygnał ich potencjału – surowy, brutalny i techniczny zarazem. Kolejnym krokiem był koncertowy zapis występu z 17 marca 2023 roku, zarejestrowany w klubie Tiivistämö w Helsinkach, ukazujący siłę ich scenicznej ekspresji. Najnowszym i najbardziej dojrzałym dokonaniem grupy jest EP-ka zatytułowana 'The Gathering of Souls’, będąca esencją ich muzycznego kierunku – intensywnego, bezkompromisowego death metalu. To właśnie ten ostatni krążek będzie przedmiotem dzisiejszej recenzji.
Malformed z przytupem zaznaczył swoją obecność na scenie deathmetalowej, a ich EP 'The Gathering of Souls’ udowadnia, że w obrębie ekstremalnego grania wciąż da się zaproponować coś świeżego, nie rezygnując z tradycyjnych filarów gatunku. Wydawnictwo zawiera cztery utwory, które umiejętnie łączą techniczne wyrafinowanie z brutalnością przywodzącą na myśl wczesne nagrania zespołów takich jak Suffocation, Cryptopsy czy Gorguts. Partie gitar są ostre i bezkompromisowe, ale zarazem pełne szczegółów – riffy przechodzą płynnie jeden w drugi, nie tracąc masywności. Sekcja rytmiczna to prawdziwa maszyna – perkusja tryska dynamiką, a bas tworzy solidny fundament bez popadania w przesadę. Wokal to głęboki, demoniczny growl, który idealnie uzupełnia całość. Produkcja jest szorstka, ale czytelna – znakomicie balansuje pomiędzy brudem a klarownością. EP-ka trwa niedługo, ale oferuje konkretną, esencjonalną porcję death metalu, który z jednej strony kłania się klasyce, a z drugiej nie boi się współczesnych rozwiązań. 'The Gathering of Souls’ to wyraźna deklaracja ambicji zespołu. Z zainteresowaniem wypatruję kolejnych materiałów i z czystym sumieniem polecam zapoznać się z tym krążkiem.
