Corpus Christii is a black metal project that has been with me for quite some time, although their latest album reached me with a bit of a delay.
While the band has held a solid position on the Portuguese extreme metal scene for years, not every release immediately grabs my attention. This time was no different—the album sat unnoticed for a while before I finally gave it a proper listen.

The latest offering from Corpus Christii, titled 'The Bitter End of Old’, marks the ninth full-length album in the discography of this Portuguese duo, who have been steadfastly walking the path of orthodox black metal since 1998. Released in the spring of 2022, the record is a clear sign of the band’s artistic growth—both in terms of song structure and production quality. Right from the start, the album surprises the listener—a delicate, acoustic intro provides a momentary sense of calm, creating a deceptive feeling of peace. However, this quiet is soon shattered by an aggressive onslaught of distorted guitars, which immediately send the listener’s heart racing. Fast tempos, relentless drumming dominated by blast beats, and a prominent, forceful bassline combine to create a dense, suffocating atmosphere that quite literally pins you to your seat. One cannot overlook the role of the vocals, which serve as one of the album’s strongest pillars. The performance—charged with passion and fury—shifts between hysterical screams, deep growls, and choral madness, intensifying the emotional weight of the lyrics and seamlessly complementing the instrumental layer. 'The Bitter End of Old’ is a clear testament that Corpus Christii has no intention of resting on their laurels. The band remains true to its roots while boldly expanding the boundaries of its sound. With modern production, carefully crafted compositions, and a distinct artistic identity, this release stands as a must-listen for any devotee of contemporary black metal.

Corpus Christii to black metalowy projekt, który towarzyszy mi od dłuższego czasu, jednak ich najnowszy album dotarł do mnie z pewnym opóźnieniem. Mimo że zespół od lat utrzymuje solidną pozycję na portugalskiej scenie ekstremalnej, nie każda ich premiera od razu przykuwa moją uwagę. Tym razem było podobnie – album przez jakiś czas przeleżał niezauważony, zanim w końcu dałem mu szansę. Czy było warto? O tym w dalszej części recenzji.
Najnowsze dzieło Corpus Christii, zatytułowane „The Bitter End of Old”, to już dziewiąty pełnoprawny album w dorobku portugalskiego duetu, który od 1998 roku konsekwentnie podąża ścieżką ortodoksyjnego black metalu. Krążek ujrzał światło dzienne wiosną 2022 roku, przynosząc ze sobą wyraźny sygnał rozwoju zespołu – zarówno pod względem struktury utworów, jak i jakości produkcji. Już sam początek albumu zaskakuje – delikatny, akustyczny wstęp wprowadza chwilowe ukojenie, wywołując fałszywe poczucie spokoju. Ten moment ciszy szybko zostaje jednak rozbity przez agresywny atak przesterowanych gitar, który błyskawicznie przyspiesza puls słuchacza. Szybkie tempa, intensywna perkusja z dominującymi blast beatami oraz wyrazista, mocno wyeksponowana linia basowa tworzą gęstą, duszną atmosferę, która dosłownie wgniata w fotel. Nie sposób pominąć roli wokalu, który stanowi jeden z filarów tej płyty. Jego pełna pasji i wściekłości interpretacja – balansująca pomiędzy histerycznymi wrzaskami, głębokimi growlami a chóralnym obłędem – potęguje emocjonalny ładunek zawarty w tekstach i doskonale uzupełnia warstwę instrumentalną. „The Bitter End of Old” to album, który jasno pokazuje, że Corpus Christii nie zamierza spoczywać na laurach. Zespół pozostaje wierny swoim korzeniom, jednocześnie odważnie poszerzając granice swojego brzmienia. Nowoczesna produkcja, przemyślane kompozycje i wyraźna tożsamość artystyczna czynią z tego wydawnictwa pozycję obowiązkową dla każdego miłośnika współczesnego black metalu.
