Excurse is a solo musical project brought to life in 2014 by Spanish multi-instrumentalist Miguel Souto — an artist previously associated with bands such as Suspiral, Arkaik Excruciation, and Sudaria. His work delves into sonic territories hovering between funeral doom, sludge, drone, and stoner doom, skillfully weaving traditional doom metal riffs with a psychedelic atmosphere and an esoteric aura. In September 2022, his debut album saw the light of day, released by the independent label Dying Sun Records — a dark, hypnotic journey into the depths of sonic abyss. Today, however, we’ll take a step back in time and explore an earlier release — a raw, yet captivating demo.
’Veiled’ is a relatively short demo — it consists of just three tracks. However, despite the modest number of compositions, there’s no reason to complain about its runtime — nearly twenty-three minutes filled with sounds that pull you in like a bottomless abyss. This release is undoubtedly aimed at fans of extremely slow tempos — and EXCURSE delivers exactly that kind of sonic experience. The guitars crush with massive, monumental riffs, their weight comparable to that of a granite tombstone. While the overall tone is deep and oppressive, it’s contrasted by sharp, distorted accents in the higher registers. What truly stands out, though, are the guitar solos — unconventional and captivating, they bring a breath of fresh air into this dense sonic mire, making the music intriguing even for listeners not accustomed to such slow-paced compositions. The drums don’t particularly stand out against the guitars — they’re present, clearly audible, but serve more as a supportive background than a focal point. They don’t evoke much excitement, but they do their job effectively. The vocals, on the other hand, are a different story — they resonate powerfully with the entire instrumental backdrop, though they’re delivered in a manner that may feel inaccessible to the untrained ear. The voice is coarse, guttural — a toxic discharge, as if seeping from rotting entrails. And that’s precisely what was needed — music that suffocates with its slowness and weight, like tar intent on consuming all life; paired with a vocal performance that infects the mind and tears it apart from within. Today, I immerse myself in these grave, deranged sounds — and I’m staying for a while.

Excurse to solowy projekt muzyczny powołany do życia w 2014 roku przez hiszpańskiego multiinstrumentalistę Miguela Souto — twórcę związanego wcześniej z takimi formacjami jak Suspiral, Arkaik Excruciation czy Sudaria. Artysta eksploruje rejony dźwiękowe oscylujące wokół funeral doom, sludge, drone oraz stoner doom, umiejętnie przeplatając klasyczne riffy doom metalu z psychodeliczną aurą i ezoterycznym klimatem. We wrześniu 2022 roku światło dzienne ujrzał jego debiutancki album, wydany przez niezależną wytwórnię Dying Sun Records — mroczna, hipnotyczna podróż w głąb dźwiękowej otchłani. Dziś jednak cofniemy się nieco w czasie i przyjrzymy się wcześniejszemu wydawnictwu — surowemu, ale intrygującemu demu.
’Veiled’ to stosunkowo krótkie demo – zawiera jedynie trzy kompozycje. Mimo skromnej liczby utworów, nie można narzekać na długość materiału – niemal dwadzieścia trzy minuty wypełnione są dźwiękami, które wciągają niczym bezdenna otchłań. To wydawnictwo zdecydowanie adresowane jest do miłośników ekstremalnie powolnych temp – EXCURSE serwuje nam właśnie taki rodzaj grania. Gitary miażdżą potężnymi, monumentalnymi riffami, których ciężar porównać można do granitowej płyty nagrobnej. Choć brzmienie instrumentów jest bardzo niskie i przytłaczające, kontrapunkt stanowią przesterowane, ostre akcenty w wyższych rejestrach. Na pierwszy plan wybija się jednak coś innego – gitarowe solówki. Nietuzinkowe, intrygujące, wnoszą do tej toni świeży oddech i sprawiają, że nawet słuchacz niezaznajomiony z tak powolną muzyką może poczuć się zaintrygowany, a nie znużony. Perkusja nie wychyla się szczególnie ponad gitary – jest obecna, dobrze słyszalna, lecz raczej służy jako tło niż główny punkt zainteresowania. Nie wywołuje specjalnych emocji, ale spełnia swoje zadanie. W zupełnym przeciwieństwie do wokalu – ten rezonuje z całością instrumentarium, choć zrealizowany jest w formie nieprzystępnej dla niewprawionego ucha. Jego brzmienie jest chropowate, głęboko gardłowe. To jad, który infekuje umysł, rozrywając go od wewnątrz. Dziś zanurzam się w tych cmentarnych, obłąkanych dźwiękach – i zostaję tam na dłużej.
