Witch Vomit is an American death metal act hailing from Portland, Oregon. Formed in 2012, the band has been steadily gaining recognition in the metal underground thanks to their raw, dark sound that fuses traditional death metal with doom-influenced passages and an old-school sense of brutality. Their music strongly echoes the legacy of genre icons such as Autopsy, Morbid Angel, and Demigod. The band’s discography includes three full-length albums and several smaller releases. Although their latest material came out last year, this review will focus on an earlier release – 'The Webs of Horror’ from 2014 – which still deserves attention for its intense and suffocating atmosphere.
Released in 2014, 'The Webs of Horror’ is one of Witch Vomit’s earliest recordings and at the same time a glimpse of what the band would go on to deliver in the years that followed. Although it’s a shorter release—closer to a demo than a full-length album—it already reveals the band’s signature traits: musty, basement-dwelling death metal soaked in doom-laden rhythms, with massive riffs and a gritty production that adds authenticity and raw charm. The sound deliberately echoes 1990s recordings, with guitars crafting heavy, suffocating structures, occasionally broken by more dynamic, biting passages. The vocals resemble a deep, graveyard growl, perfectly complementing the suffocating atmosphere of the tracks. 'The Webs of Horror’ may not be a groundbreaking release, but it serves as an excellent example of how to pay tribute to genre classics while maintaining a distinct identity. It stands strong both as a document of the band’s early days and as a standalone release—steeped in filth, darkness, and the genuine spirit of death metal’s underground.

Witch Vomit to amerykańska formacja death metalowa wywodząca się z Portland w stanie Oregon. Zespół zawiązał się w 2012 roku i od tamtej pory robi się o nich coraz głośniej w metalowym podziemiu dzięki swojemu surowemu, mrocznemu brzmieniu, łączącemu tradycyjny death metal z doomowymi akcentami oraz oldschoolową brutalnością. Ich twórczość silnie nawiązuje do dorobku takich ikon gatunku jak Autopsy, Morbid Angel czy Demigod. W dorobku grupy znajdują się trzy długogrające albumy oraz kilka pomniejszych wydawnictw. Choć ostatni materiał ukazał się w ubiegłym roku, w tej recenzji skoncentrujemy się na wcześniejszym krążku – 'The Webs of Horror’ z 2014 roku, który wciąż zasługuje na uwagę dzięki swojej intensywnej i dusznej atmosferze.
Wydany w 2014 roku 'The Webs of Horror’ to jedno z pierwszych nagrań Witch Vomit i jednocześnie przedsmak tego, co grupa prezentowała w późniejszych latach. Choć mamy do czynienia z krótszym materiałem – bliższym demówce niż pełnoprawnemu albumowi – już tutaj można wychwycić charakterystyczne elementy ich brzmienia: zatęchły, piwniczny death metal zanurzony w doomowych rytmach, z masywnymi riffami i chropowatą produkcją, która nadaje całości wiarygodności i surowego uroku. Dźwięk celowo przypomina nagrania z lat 90., z gitarami budującymi ciężkie, duszne kompozycje, przełamywane bardziej dynamicznymi, zadziornymi fragmentami. Wokal przypomina głęboki, cmentarny growl, idealnie współgrający z przytłaczającą atmosferą utworów. ‘The Webs of Horror’ nie jest pozycją przełomową, ale stanowi znakomity przykład, jak oddać hołd klasykom gatunku, zachowując przy tym własną tożsamość. To materiał, który broni się zarówno jako świadectwo początków zespołu, jak i jako samodzielne wydawnictwo – przesiąknięte brudem, mrokiem i szczerym duchem death metalowego undergroundu.
