Ecocide is a Dutch death metal band formed in 2012 in Haarlem by Sten Govers (guitar/vocals), Bas Gijzen (drums), and Rick Stikkelorum (bass). In 2014, the lineup was expanded with the addition of Dennis Bikker, who took on the role of second guitarist. In its early days, the band played thrash metal infused with death metal elements, drawing inspiration from the works of H.P. Lovecraft, 1980s horror films, and science fiction. Their debut album set the band’s musical direction, focusing on a classic death metal sound reminiscent of bands like Death, Bolt Thrower, and Massacre. Their second album, 'Metamorphosis’, was released in late 2023 and is the subject of the following review.
After a decade of silence, Dutch band Ecocide returns with Metamorphosis, an album that pays tribute to the classic death metal of the 1990s. Released in 2023, the record delivers an uncompromising ride through brutally raw, old-school sounds steeped in the legacy of icons like Death, Pestilence, and Obituary. The album opens with the ominous instrumental “Prologue,” mercilessly drawing the listener into a dark vortex of sound. From there, it only gets heavier — crushing riffs, solos as precise as a surgeon’s scalpel, and a suffocating atmosphere reminiscent of classic death metal. The following tracks combine massive, oppressive riffs with tightly executed, technically refined solos, offering a clear nod to the genre’s pioneers. The album features nine compositions with a total runtime of nearly thirty-four minutes. The production, though rough and unpolished, masterfully captures the spirit of the ’90s, with punchy drums and sharp, defined guitar work. Sten Govers’s vocals — deep and gritty — blend seamlessly with the instrumental backdrop, enhancing the album’s intensity and expression. 'Metamorphosis’ is a solid, sincere offering for fans of traditional death metal. While it doesn’t break new ground, it faithfully channels the sound and aesthetic of the genre’s golden age. If you haven’t yet explored Ecocide’s music, this album is an excellent place to start.

Ecocide to niderlandzka formacja death metalowa, powstała w 2012 roku w Haarlemie z inicjatywy Stena Goversa (gitara/wokal), Basa Gijzena (perkusja) oraz Ricka Stikkeloruma (bas). W 2014 roku skład uzupełnił Dennis Bikker, obejmując rolę drugiego gitarzysty. Na początku działalności grupa wykonywała thrash metal wzbogacony o wpływy death metalu, czerpiąc inspirację z prozy H.P. Lovecrafta, horrorów z lat osiemdziesiątych oraz filmów science fiction. Ich pierwszy album wyznaczył kierunek muzyczny zespołu, koncentrując się na klasycznym brzmieniu death metalu, nawiązującym do stylistyki takich zespołów jak Death, Bolt Thrower czy Massacre. Ich drugi album ‘Metamorphosis’ ujrzał światło dzienne pod koniec 2023 roku i to właśnie tego materiału dotyczyć będzie poniższa recenzja.
Po dekadzie ciszy, holenderski zespół Ecocide powraca z albumem Metamorphosis, który stanowi hołd dla klasycznego death metalu z lat dziewięćdziesiątych. Krążek, wypuszczony w 2023 roku, to bezkompromisowa jazda przez piekielnie surowe, oldschoolowe brzmienia, przesiąknięte wpływami takich ikon jak Death, Pestilence czy Obituary. Album otwiera złowieszczy, instrumentalny „Prologue”, który bezlitośnie wciąga słuchacza w mroczny wir dźwięków. Potem jest tylko ciężej — potężne riffy, precyzyjne jak chirurgiczne cięcie solówki, i duszna atmosfera klasycznego deathu. Następujące utwory zestawiają masywne, przytłaczające riffy z precyzyjnymi, technicznie dopracowanymi solówkami, składając wyraźny ukłon w stronę klasyków gatunku. Całość materiału obejmuje dziewięć kompozycji o łącznym czasie trwania bliskim trzydziestu czterech minut. Brzmienie płyty, choć szorstkie i niespolerowane, doskonale przywołuje atmosferę lat 90., z mocno zaakcentowaną perkusją i wyrazistymi partiami gitar. Głos Stena Goversa — głęboki i chropowaty — znakomicie współgra z instrumentalną warstwą albumu, wzmacniając jego ekspresję i intensywność. 'Metamorphosis’ to rzetelna, autentyczna propozycja dla sympatyków tradycyjnego death metalu. Choć krążek nie odkrywa nowych lądów, znakomicie oddaje charakter i estetykę złotej ery gatunku. Jeśli jeszcze nie mieliście okazji zapoznać się z twórczością Ecocide, ten album to świetny punkt wyjścia.
