Fulci is an Italian death metal band formed in 2013. The group’s name is a tribute to Italian horror director Lucio Fulci, reflecting their fascination with horror cinema. Hailing from the Campania region, the band combines brutal death metal with elements of horror synth, creating a dark, cinematic atmosphere. Their albums, such as 'Tropical Sun’ (2019) and 'Exhumed Information’ (2021), are filled with references to classic gore films. Fulci stands out with deep growls, heavy riffs, and an intense overall mood. The band’s music is a sonic homage to horror and violence, delivered in an extreme, film-inspired style. In August 2024, they released the album 'Duck Face Killings’, which will be the subject of the following review.
’Duck Face Killings’ is the fifth album by the Italian band Fulci. As mentioned earlier, the band is known for blending brutal death metal with the atmosphere of B-grade horror films. The Italians’ new material is inspired by Lucio Fulci’s film 'The New York Ripper’ (1982). The album features fourteen tracks with a total runtime of nearly thirty-three minutes. 'Duck Face Killings’ is an intense, brutal, yet surprisingly diverse journey through the world of extreme metal, deeply rooted in gore and horror aesthetics. It’s not just raw death metal—it’s also an experiment in form and atmosphere. At its core, the album delivers classic death metal—heavy, down-tuned riffs, blast beats, and aggressive, guttural growls. The production is gritty yet clear, which enhances the „cinematic” brutality of the sound. Fulci has long incorporated samples from horror films, primarily the works of Lucio Fulci—and this album is no exception. These fragments create an unsettling atmosphere and build a narrative, as if we were listening to the soundtrack of a brutal slasher film. This material also stands out for its avant-garde sound, most notably in the track 'Knife’, where crossover influences from hip-hop blend with a metal foundation. This experiment didn’t fully work for me, but it might just take a few more listens for it to settle into my mind. The final track, on the other hand, presents a fusion of doom metal heaviness with a melancholic jazz saxophone, adding unexpected depth and a touch of psychedelia to the conclusion. 'Duck Face Killings’ is full-blooded death metal infused with elements of horror, hip-hop, and jazz. It’s not just about brutality—it’s also about surprising creativity. Fulci proves that extreme metal can still be fresh and unpredictable.

Fulci to włoski zespół death metalowy, założony w 2013 roku. Nazwa grupy nawiązuje do włoskiego reżysera horrorów, Lucia Fulciego, co odzwierciedla ich fascynację kinem grozy. Zespół pochodzi z Kampanii i łączy brutalny death metal z elementami horror synthu, tworząc mroczny, filmowy klimat. Ich albumy, takie jak 'Tropical Sun’ (2019) i 'Exhumed Information’ (2021), zawierają liczne odniesienia do klasycznych filmów gore. Fulci wyróżnia się niskim growlem, ciężkimi riffami i intensywną atmosferą. Fulci to muzyczne oddanie hołdu horrorowi i przemocy, utrzymane w ekstremalnym, kinowym stylu. W sierpniu 2024 roku światło dzienne ujrzał album ‘Duck Face Killings’ i to właśnie on będzie tematem poniższej recenzji.
’Duck Face Killings’ to piąty album w dorobku włoskiego Fulci. Zespół ten, jak już wspomniałem we wstępie znany jest z połączenia brutalnego death metalu z atmosferą horrorów klasy B. Nowy materiał Włochów zainspirowany jest filmem Lucio Fulciego – 'The New York Ripper’ (1982). Na krążku znajdziemy czternaście kompozycji, o łącznym czasie wynoszącym blisko trzydzieści trzy minuty. 'Duck Face Killings’ to intensywna, brutalna i zarazem zaskakująco różnorodna podróż przez świat ekstremalnego metalu, mocno zakorzeniona w estetyce gore i horroru. To nie tylko surowy death metal, ale także eksperyment z formą i klimatem. Trzon płyty to klasyczny death metal – ciężkie, nisko strojone riffy, blast beasty i agresywny, gardłowy growl. Produkcja jest brudna, lecz czytelna, co wzmacnia „filmową” brutalność dźwięku. Fulci od lat wplata do swoich utworów sample z filmów grozy, głównie dzieł Lucia Fulciego – i tutaj jest podobnie. Te fragmenty wprowadzają atmosferę niepokoju i budują narrację, jakbyśmy słuchali ścieżki dźwiękowej do brutalnego slashera. Materiał ten wyróżnia się również awangardowym brzmieniem, co można odczuć zwłaszcza w utworze ‘Knife’ – czuć tu wpływy cross-over z hip-hopem, które mieszają się z metalowym podkładem. Ten zabiega akurat nie do końca mi pasował, ale możliwe, że potrzebuję do tego jeszcze kilku odsłuchów tej płyty, by się wchłonęło w umysł. Za to ostatnia kompozycja zaprezentowała połączenie doom metalowego ciężaru z melancholijnym, jazzowym saksofonem, co nadaje temu finałowi niespodziewanej głębi i psychodelii. ‘Duck Face Killings’ to pełnokrwisty death metal z elementami horroru, hip-hopu i jazzu. To nie jest tylko brutalność – to także zaskakująca kreatywność. Fulci udowadniają, że ekstremalny metal wciąż może być świeży i nieprzewidywalny.
