The Finnish band Moonfall was founded in 2008 in Hamina. After releasing a demo in 2010, they went on hiatus, only to return to the scene in 2020. The band consists of Goatprayer and Black Moon Necromancer, who are also involved in other musical projects such as Beherit, Ceremonial Torture and Witchcraft. Their first studio album, 'Odes to the Ritual Hills’, was released in April 2025 under the auspices of Iron Bonehead Productions. Moonfall’s work is a fusion of black metal and doom metal styles, drawing from the classics of these genres.
The debut album of the Finnish duo Moonfall is a gloomy journey into the aesthetics of the early 90s, which is a clear nod to the original black and doom metal. The album consists of four compositions, lasting twenty-seven minutes in total. The artists serve up raw, overwhelming bass riffs and sinister synthesizer parts, which effectively build an atmosphere of anxiety and mystery. The opening instrumental track introduces the listener to a graveyard mood with trance-like, reverberant keys. True intensity appears with the guitars – their sickly, deformed sound carries with it slow, heavy, rotting melodies. There are fragments with a slightly faster tempo, but the slowdowns and viscosity of doom metal dominate. The production, despite its clarity, retains its unpolished, original form. The bass is one of the strongest links – pushed to the forefront, it sounds massive, deep and often carries the musical message, and not only supports it from the back. The synthesizers create dark ambient structures, evoking associations with esotericism. The drums, although electronically generated, have been skillfully incorporated so that they do not immediately reveal their digital nature – they remain in the background, creating a rhythmic backdrop without dominating. The vocals are another element that attracts attention – extremely low, rough, almost sloppy, they sound like a voice emerging from a forgotten grave. Despite their brutality, they are able to give parts of the songs a bit of melody, without losing their ghostly character. 'Odes to the Ritual Hills’ is an uncompromising, sleazy journey through the essence of black-doom, the strength of which lies in the skillful balancing between severity and atmospheric weight. This album is not for everyone – but those who find beauty in musical rot and ritual aura will appreciate it to the fullest.

Fińska formacja Moonfall została założona w 2008 roku w miejscowości Hamina. Po wypuszczeniu dema w 2010 roku zawiesiła aktywność, by powrócić na scenę w 2020 roku. Zespół tworzą Goatprayer oraz Black Moon Necromancer, którzy są również zaangażowani w inne projekty muzyczne, takie jak Beherit, Ceremonial Torture czy Witchcraft. Ich pierwszy album studyjny, 'Odes to the Ritual Hills’, miał premierę w kwietniu 2025 roku pod egidą wytwórni Iron Bonehead Productions. Twórczość Moonfall stanowi fuzję stylów black metal oraz doom metal, czerpiąc z klasyki tych gatunków.
Debiutancki krążek fińskiego duetu Moonfall to ponura wyprawa w estetykę wczesnych lat 90., będąca wyraźnym ukłonem w stronę pierwotnego black i doom metalu. Zawartość albumu to cztery kompozycje, trwające łącznie dwadzieścia siedem minut. Artyści serwują surowe, przytłaczające riffy basowe oraz złowrogie partie syntezatorowe, które skutecznie budują atmosferę niepokoju i tajemniczości. Już otwierający, instrumentalny utwór wprowadza słuchacza w cmentarny nastrój za pomocą transowych, pogrążonych w pogłosie klawiszy. Prawdziwa intensywność pojawia się wraz z gitarami – ich chorobliwe, zdeformowane brzmienie niesie ze sobą wolne, ciężkie, gnijące melodie. Zdarzają się fragmenty o nieco szybszym tempie, jednak dominują zwolnienia i lepkość doom metalu. Produkcja, mimo swojej klarowności, zachowuje niepolerowaną, pierwotną formę. Bas stanowi jedno z najmocniejszych ogniw – wysunięty na pierwszy plan, brzmi masywnie, głęboko i nierzadko wiedzie muzyczny przekaz, a nie tylko wspiera go z tyłu. Syntezatory tworzą dark ambientowe struktury, przywołując skojarzenia z ezoteryką. Perkusja, choć wygenerowana elektronicznie, została na tyle sprawnie wkomponowana, że nie od razu zdradza swoją cyfrową naturę – pozostaje w tle, tworząc rytmiczne tło bez dominacji. Wokal to kolejny element przyciągający uwagę – ekstremalnie niski, szorstki, niemal niechlujny, brzmi niczym głos wyłaniający się z zapomnianego grobu. Mimo swojej brutalności, potrafi nadać fragmentom utworów odrobinę melodyjności, nie tracąc jednak swego upiornego charakteru. 'Odes to the Ritual Hills’ to bezkompromisowa, obskurna podróż przez esencję black-doomu, której siła leży w umiejętnym balansowaniu między surowością a atmosferycznym ciężarem. To album nie dla każdego – ale ci, którzy odnajdują piękno w muzycznej zgniliźnie i rytualnej aurze, docenią go w pełni.
