Nithe is a Norwegian metal band from Kristiansand, formed in 2020 by former Damnation musicians: Henrik Nuland (vocals), Aksel Monrad-Krohn (bass guitar), Aleksander Torjesen (lead guitar) and Stian Utheim Breiland (drums). Their sound is a mix of genres such as black metal, thrash and death metal, which they themselves describe as „necro metal”. The first demo entitled „Cemetery Fever” saw the light of day on May 12, 2021, while the mini-album „Night of the Ghoul” was released in January 2024. The latest material has appeared just now and it is the subject of today’s review.
„Funeral Death” is an EP that premiered only yesterday, and it has already won my heart thanks to its old-school sound, which reaches back to the early nineties, evoking associations with early Darkthrone. As mentioned in the introduction, the musicians skillfully combined thrash, black and death metal. The best of metal came out of it – unpretentious brutality, rawness and atmosphere. The EP „Funeral Death” does not try to be modern or technical fireworks – instead, it offers honest, full of venom energy that hits you straight in the gut. The material does not impress with its length, because it consists of only four compositions, which close in less than fifteen minutes. The compositions are characterized by variable tempo, and definitely faster parts dominate, which immediately drives the listener to the chair with intensity and aggression. However, they are interspersed with slower, heavier fragments that add depth to the songs and allow you to catch your breath for a moment. Thanks to this dynamics, the whole thing is not boring, despite its short duration. The material, although short, shows the full potential of the band – both in terms of technique and sense of atmosphere. As for the musical matter, sharp, grainy riffs dominate here, played at a fast pace, with a „jerky” attack characteristic of thrash metal. The guitar parts often change tempo – from accelerated tremolo sections to slower, sultry fragments reminiscent of doom/death slowdowns. The bass guitar is not just a background for the rest of the instruments. It plays with a full, low-set sound, reinforcing the weight of the composition. The drums are intense and uncompromising. It finds its place perfectly in slower tempos, but even in blasting moments it is equally catchy, sending shivers down the recipient’s body, and the drummer’s playing style evokes the spirits of the precursors of the second wave of black metal. The vocals are a filthy and aggressive element that doesn’t enter into melodic chants, but attacks with furious, rough screams. To sum up „Funeral Death” – it’s controlled chaos – intense, loud and uncompromising, with a strong foundation in old school extreme metal, devoid of ornaments but full of passion and honest aggression.

Nithe to norweska formacja metalowa wywodząca się z Kristiansand, powstała w 2020 roku z inicjatywy byłych muzyków zespołu Damnation: Henrika Nulanda (śpiew), Aksela Monrada-Krohna (gitara basowa), Aleksandra Torjesena (gitara prowadząca) oraz Stiana Utheima Breilanda (perkusja). Ich brzmienie stanowi mieszankę gatunków takich jak black metal, thrash i death metal, które sami opisują mianem „nekro metalu”. Pierwsze demo zatytułowane „Cemetery Fever” ujrzało światło dzienne 12 maja 2021 roku, natomiast minialbum „Night of the Ghoul” został wydany w styczniu 2024 roku. Najświeższy materiał pojawił się teraz i to właśnie on jest przedmiotem dzisiejszej recenzji.
„Funeral Death” to EP-ka, która premierę miała zaledwie wczoraj, a już wbiła się w mój gust za sprawą oldschoolowego brzmienia, które sięga korzeniami do początku lat dziewięćdziesiątych, przywołując skojarzenia z wczesnym Darkthronem. Tak jak wspomniane było we wstępie. Muzycy umiejętnie połączyli thrash, black i death metal. Wyszło z tego to, co w metalu najlepsze — bezpretensjonalna brutalność, surowość i klimat. EP-ka „Funeral Death” nie sili się na nowoczesność ani techniczne fajerwerki — zamiast tego oferuje szczerą, pełną jadu energię, która uderza prosto w trzewia. Materiał nie zachwyca długością, bowiem składa się z zaledwie czterech kompozycji, które zamykają się w niecałych piętnastu minutach. Kompozycje charakteryzują się zmiennym tempem, a dominują zdecydowanie szybsze partie, które z miejsca wbijają słuchacza w fotel intensywnością i agresją. Przeplatane są jednak wolniejszymi, cięższymi fragmentami, które dodają utworom głębi i pozwalają chwilowo złapać oddech. Dzięki tej dynamice całość nie nuży, mimo krótkiego czasu trwania. Materiał, choć krótki, pokazuje pełnię możliwości zespołu — zarówno pod względem techniki, jak i wyczucia klimatu. Co do materii muzycznej, to dominują tu ostre, ziarniste riffy, grane w szybkim tempie, z charakterystycznym dla thrash metalu „szarpanym” atakiem. Partie gitar często ulegają zmianie tempa – od rozpędzonych sekcji tremolo po wolniejsze, duszne fragmenty przypominające doom/deathowe zwolnienia. Gitara basowa nie stanowi tylko tła dla reszty instrumentów. Gra z pełnym, nisko osadzonym brzmieniem, wzmacniając ciężar kompozycji. Perkusja jest intensywna i bezkompromisowa. Perfekcyjnie odnajduje się w wolniejszych tempach, ale i w blastujących momentach jest równie bardzo chwytliwa, wywołuje dreszcz na ciele odbiorcy, a styl gry perkusisty przywołuje duchy prekursorów drugiej fali black metalu. Wokal jest obskurnym i pełnym agresji elementem, który nie wchodzi w melodyjne zaśpiewy, tylko atakuje wściekłym, chropowatym krzykiem. Podsumowując „Funeral Death” – jest to kontrolowany chaos – intensywny, głośny i bezkompromisowy, z mocnym osadzeniem w ekstremalnym metalu starej szkoły, pozbawionym ozdobników, ale pełnym pasji i szczerej agresji.
