Ultima Thule is an enigmatic band that creates raw black metal. It is difficult to find information about who is involved in this band, and the beginning of their activity can be attributed to the years around 2017, because that was when their debut demo material was released. A year later, a split with Massacre Winds was spat out. Since then, there has been a silence on releases, but the band is still active, so there is a chance for new releases in the future. The following review concerns the debut – 'Enthralling Lunar Majesty’.
The first sounds, although maintained in a dark ambient atmosphere, bring ominous feelings due to the sound of fire that consumes everything in its path. After this short introduction, uncompromising black metal in the old style, which draws heavily from the early nineties, comes to the fore. The music is raw, dominated by medium and slow tempos, aggressive riffs and vocals characteristic of black metal. Lyrically, the band touches on topics related to war, paganism and dark forces. This material consists of seven songs, the total duration of which is almost twenty-two minutes. If you expect a beautiful, polished production, this material will disappoint you greatly. There is no room here for trendy, catchy melodies. However, this does not mean that this work is devoid of melody. The melody line is created by obscure guitar riffs, which – despite their raw form – are quite easy to remember. We will experience an even darker atmosphere thanks to the gloomy keyboards, which do not lean forward, but fill the background, cooperating perfectly with the guitar line. The drums here sound rough and organic, reminiscent of early recordings from the Norwegian scene – full of dirt and aggression. The lack of studio polish adds authenticity, as if recorded in a musty basement filled with the stench of black candles. The vocals support the raw form, presenting a screeching scream. It is filthy and repulsive, almost inhuman. It pierces the instrumental wall of sound like a rusty blade. It is a pure expression of pain, contempt and cold hatred. A must-have for maniacs of raw sound.

Ultima Thule to enigmatyczny zespół, który kreuje surowy black metal. Ciężko dotrzeć do informacji, kto się udziela w tym tworze, a początek jego działalności można przypisać na lata około 2017 roku, gdyż to właśnie wtedy ukazał się ich debiutancki materiał demo. Rok później na światło dzienne został wypluty split z Massacre Winds. Od tamtej pory nastała wydawnicza cisza, ale zespół pozostaje wciąż aktywny, więc jest jakaś szansa na nowe wydawnictwa w przyszłości. Poniższa recenzja dotyczy debiutu – ‘Enthralling Lunar Majesty’.
Pierwsze dźwięki, choć utrzymane w dark ambientowej atmosferze, przynoszą złowieszcze odczucia za sprawą odgłosu ognia, który pochłania wszystko, co stanie mu na drodze. Po tym krótkim wstępie na pierwszy plan wchodzi już bezkompromisowy black metal utrzymany w starym stylu, który czerpie garściami z wczesnych lat dziewięćdziesiątych. Muzyka jest surowa, zdominowana przez średnie i wolne tempa, agresywne riffy i charakterystyczne dla black metalu wokale. Tekstowo zespół porusza tematy związane z wojną, pogaństwem i mrocznymi siłami. Na materiał ten składa się siedem utworów, których łączny czas trwania wynosi blisko dwadzieścia dwie minuty. Jeśli liczysz na piękną, wypolerowaną produkcję, to ten materiał bardzo cię rozczaruje. Tu nie ma miejsca na modne, chwytliwe melodie. Jednak nie oznacza to, że dzieło to jest pozbawione melodii. Linię melodyczną tworzą obskurne riffy gitar, które pomimo swojej surowej formy dość łatwo zapadają w pamięci. Jeszcze bardziej mrocznego klimatu doświadczymy dzięki posępnym klawiszom, które nie wychylają się do przodu, a wypełniają tło, świetnie współpracując z linią gitar. Perkusja brzmi tu szorstko i organicznie, przywodząc na myśl wczesne nagrania z norweskiej sceny – jest pełna brudu i agresji. Brak studyjnego wygładzenia dodaje autentyczności, jakby nagrano ją w zatęchłej piwnicy, którą wypełnia swąd z czarnych świec. Wokal podtrzymuje surową formę, prezentując skrzeczący wrzask. Jest obskurny i odpychający, niemal nieludzki. Przeszywa instrumentalną ścianę dźwięku niczym rdzawe ostrze. To czysta ekspresja bólu, pogardy i zimnej nienawiści. Pozycja obowiązkowa dla maniaków surowego brzmienia.
