DRUID LORD – Relics of the Dead

Druid Lord is an American doom/death metal band, formed in 2010 in Orlando, Florida. Their music is a dark mix of slow, heavy doom metal riffs and the dark atmosphere of old-school death metal. Druid Lord’s lyrics focus on horror, occultism and death, often inspired by classic horror films. The band features four musicians who are involved in many other bands, thanks to which their musical skills are perfectly developed. Their discography currently includes three albums, several splits and short EPs. In today’s review, we will focus on their latest full-length album.

’Relics of the Dead’ is Druid Lord’s third full-length album, released in January 2022 by Hells Headbangers. The content of this album follows the already chosen path, thanks to which the musical matter is an uncompromising art based on the cult of death and the atmosphere of horror. The opening track surprised me with the keyboard parts, which perfectly emphasized the atmosphere of this album, and at the same time perfectly entered into cooperation with the guitars. This material consists of eight songs (including two instrumental ones), whose total duration is over forty-one minutes. The tempos, as befits a doom metal environment, will not overwhelm with fast melodies, but you can notice a few faster moments. However, the heaviness is dominant. It is a fucking essence extracted from the guitars, which with slow sounds evokes in the imagination the slow leakage of blood from a congealing wound. This material is very diverse. We will find on it both funeral doom metal fumes and death metal gallops. The keyboard passages allow you to immerse yourself in an almost gothic atmosphere. There is also no shortage of more raw, sludge sounds. The guitar solos, on the other hand, deliver catchy melodies, full of technical nuances. The vocals are a grave growl that does not escape into melodic chants, but remains raw and cold. The drums lag a bit behind, but effectively emphasize the rest of the instruments. In slower moments it sounds a bit hypnotic, but when it speeds up, it adds great dynamics. For me, this is an album that is hard to tear yourself away from and if you like slow and heavy sounds, you absolutely have to get to know it.

Druid Lord to amerykański zespół grający doom/death metal, założony w 2010 roku w Orlando na Florydzie. Ich muzyka to mroczna mieszanka powolnych, ciężkich riffów doom metalu i mrocznego klimatu death metalu starej szkoły. Teksty Druid Lord koncentrują się na horrorze, okultyzmie i śmierci, często inspirowane są klasycznymi filmami grozy. W zespole figuruje czterech muzyków, którzy udzielają się w wielu innych zespołach, dzięki czemu ich warsztat muzyczny jest doskonale rozwinięty. W ich dyskografii znajdziemy obecnie trzy albumy, kilka splitów i krótkich materiałów EP. W dzisiejszej recenzji skupimy się na ich ostatnim długogrającym krążku.

’Relics of the Dead’ to trzeci pełnowymiarowy album Druid Lord, który ukazał się w styczniu 2022 roku nakładem Hells Headbangers. Zawartość tego krążka podąża obraną już wcześniej ścieżką, dzięki czemu materia muzyczna jest bezkompromisową sztuką opartą na kulcie śmierci i atmosferze grozy. Otwierający numer zaskoczył mnie klawiszowymi partiami, które świetnie podkreśliły klimat tego albumu, a jednocześnie doskonale weszły we współpracę z gitarami. Na ten materiał składa się osiem utworów (w tym dwa instrumentalne), których łączny czas trwania wynosi ponad czterdzieści jeden minut. Tempa, jak przystało na doom metalową otoczkę nie powalą szybkimi melodiami, ale da się zauważyć kilka szybszych momentów. Natomiast dominujący jest ciężar. To pieprzona esencja wyciągnięta z gitar, która powolnymi dźwiękami przywołuje w wyobraźni powolne wyciekanie krwi z zastygającej rany. Materiał ten jest bardzo zróżnicowany. Znajdziemy na nim zarówno funeral doom metalowe wyziewy, jak i death metalowe galopy. Klawiszowe pasaże pozwalają zanurzyć się w niemal gotyckim klimacie. Nie brakuje też bardziej surowych, sludge’owych brzmień. Gitarowe solówki dostarczają natomiast chwytliwe melodie, pełne technicznych niuansów. Wokale to grobowy growling, który nie ucieka w melodyjne zaśpiewy, a pozostaje surowy i zimny. Perkusja pozostaje nieco w tyle, ale skutecznie podkreśla resztę instrumentów. W wolniejszych momentach brzmi nieco hipnotycznie, ale jak przyśpiesza, to dodaje świetnej dynamiki. Jak dla mnie jest to album, od którego ciężko się oderwać i jeśli lubicie wolne i ciężkie brzmienia, to koniecznie musicie poznać go poznać.
