FILTHGRAVE: interview with Arild Bendixen and Felipe Camargo

The Norwegian band Filthgrave was formed in 2016. So far their portfolio consists of a demo and an EP, and in autumn of 2024, they released their first full-length album, “Unholy Manifestations”. Recently, the musicians have returned to the stage to promote their latest material, playing before Raumer in Oslo. Their music is old-school black metal with a death/thrash metal vibe. The current lineup is: Arild (vocals), Felipe and Tonio (guitars), Fredrik (bass guitar), and Jonas (drums).

– How did your adventure with metal music begin?

Arild: It started when I met Felipe who played guitar in a pub. And we were really eager to start playing in a metal band so we started jamming a few times with Marius who was a drummer and Bjørn Arild who was a bassist. And the rest is history as they say.

– Where do you get your ideas and inspiration for your creativity?

Arild: Felipe writes most of the music and I have written some of the lyrics.

Felipe: Inspiration comes when least expected. I am not with my guitar 24/7. Sometimes I can come up with a melody in my head while walking or sitting in a bus. If the riff is memorable enough I will pick up my guitar and expand that idea. Lately I’m going more into solos and double melodies to make things more interesting. I will also have a drum pattern in my head and work with that. But I must confess I do find inspiration if I’m listening to obscure classical music. Concerning music I try not to listen to new music just because I don’t want to be tainted by new stuff. I just listen to the old things. I don’t want my brain to expand into nowaday trends.

As far as lyrics go, I’ve been inspired in the past by books (even the Bible, believe it or not) and some movies and then just take my own stories and fantasies and try to create something new. If I write about more deep spiritual stuff I will approach from it a very grounded and most of the times own experiences that I’ve had while growing up in an isolated place.

– Apart from Filthgrave, is any of you involved in any other projects?

Arild: No, not at the moment.

– Are you planning to release your full-length album on physical media, not only digitally?

Arild: Our full-length will be released on CD in mid-June.

– What advice would you give to musicians who are just starting out with their first band?

Arild: Not sure really, just start with some riffs and ideas and go from there. As long as you are dedicated to music and work hard anyone can make it now.

– In March 2025, you returned to the stage after a two-year break from performing. Are you planning more shows than the one in Oslo?

Arild: Not at the moment, no. But it would be cool to play abroad, and we hope
to do a tour some time in Poland and Germany.

– In November 2024, you released your first full-length album. What did the recording process look like? Do you handle all the production yourselves?

Felipe: Well it was a bit of a difficult situation for us. Finding a decent studio in Oslo is difficult and in Norway since everything is expensive you can expect the studios to have insane prices! So yeah, it took our time to land in a studio. However our drummer’s uncle has a killer studio and he kinda gave us the keys to the studio for a couple of days. So what we did we just went in there and recorded everything ourselves. We just pressed the “record” button. We first recorded all the songs with drums and guitars. Afterwards I recorded the bass, I added all the solos and other melodies. And at the end we recorded vocals at Arild’s place. His neighbours were really happy! 😉

I have an old contact in Chile that did the mix and master for 666 USD. He understood what we wanted sound wise for the album. We wanted to sound clear but not sterile, a bit grim but not that harsh. We wanted a proper underground sound for this album. Only people with a special underground taste and a pair of rotten ears will understand what we wanted to create! Fuck off trends and polished “black metal”.

– Is it easy for new bands to join the black metal scene in Norway these days?

Arild: I think so. If you have a guitar and a home studio everyone can release music these days. It has become too easy, I think!

– Is there still a lot of interest in black metal in Norway?

Arild: Yes, I would say so. You still have the Inferno Metal Festival which pretyy much sells out every year and some other festivals which are well known and I think the scene is still very much alive.

– Any final words to our readers?

Arild: Stay oldschool and don’t believe the hypes. Ugh!

Norweski zespół Filthgrave powstał w 2016 roku. Do tej pory ich dorobek składa się z demo i EP-ki, a jesienią 2024 roku wydany został ich pierwszy album długogrający „Unholy Manifestations”. Niedawno muzycy wrócili na scenę, aby promować najnowszy materiał, grając przed Raumer w Oslo. Ich muzyka to oldschoolowy black metal podszyty death/thrash metalowym klimatem. Obecny skład to: Arild (wokal), Felipe i Tonio (gitary), Fredrik (gitara basowa) oraz Jonas (perkusja).

– Jak zaczęła się Wasza przygoda z muzyką metalową?

Arild: Wszystko zaczęło się, gdy poznałem Felipe, który grał na gitarze w pubie. I bardzo chcieliśmy zacząć grać w zespole metalowym, więc zaczęliśmy kilka razy jammować z Mariusem, który był perkusistą i Bjørnem Arildem, który był basistą. A reszta, jak to mówią, to już historia.

– Skąd czerpiecie pomysły i inspirację do swojej twórczości?

Arild: Felipe pisze większość muzyki, a ja napisałem kilka tekstów.

Felipe: Inspiracja przychodzi, gdy najmniej się jej spodziewam. Nie jestem z gitarą 24/7. Czasami mogę wymyślić melodię w głowie, gdy idę lub siedzę w autobusie. Jeśli riff jest wystarczająco zapadający w pamięć, biorę gitarę i rozwijam ten pomysł. Ostatnio bardziej zagłębiam się w solówki i podwójne melodie, aby uczynić rzeczy bardziej interesującymi. Mam też w głowie jakiś wzór perkusyjny i pracuję z nim. Ale muszę przyznać, że znajduję inspirację, gdy słucham mało znanej muzyki klasycznej. Jeśli chodzi o muzykę, staram się nie słuchać nowej muzyki, tylko dlatego, że nie chcę być skażony nowymi rzeczami. Słucham po prostu starych rzeczy. Nie chcę, aby mój mózg rozszerzał się na współczesne trendy.

Jeśli chodzi o teksty, w przeszłości inspirowały mnie książki (nawet Biblia, wierzcie lub nie) i niektóre filmy, a potem po prostu biorę własne historie i fantazje i próbuję stworzyć coś nowego. Jeśli piszę o głębszych duchowych rzeczach, podchodzę do tego bardzo przyziemnie i najczęściej na podstawie własnych doświadczeń, które miałem dorastając w odizolowanym miejscu.

– Czy ktoś z was jest zaangażowany w jakieś inne projekty poza Filthgrave?

Arild: Nie, nie w tej chwili.

– Czy planujecie wydać swój album na nośnikach fizycznych, nie tylko w wersji cyfrowej?

Arild: Nasz album zostanie wydany na CD w połowie czerwca.

– Jakiej rady udzieliłbyś muzykom, którzy dopiero zaczynają ze swoim pierwszym zespołem?

Arild: Nie jestem pewien, po prostu zacznij od riffów i pomysłów, a potem idź dalej. Jeśli poświęcisz się muzyce i będziesz ciężko pracować, każdemu może się to teraz udać.

– W marcu 2025 wróciliście na scenę po dwuletniej przerwie. Czy planujecie więcej koncertów niż ten w Oslo?

Arild: Na razie nie. Ale fajnie byłoby zagrać za granicą i mamy nadzieję, że z czasem uda nam się zrobić trasę po Polsce i Niemczech.

– W listopadzie 2024 wydaliście swój pierwszy pełnometrażowy album. Jak wyglądał proces nagrywania? Czy sami zajmujecie się całą produkcją?

Felipe: Cóż, dla nas była to trochę trudna sytuacja. Znalezienie przyzwoitego studia w Oslo jest trudne, a ponieważ w Norwegii wszystko jest drogie, można się spodziewać, że studia będą miały szalone ceny! Więc tak, zajęło nam trochę czasu, aby znaleźć studio. Jednak wujek naszego perkusisty ma zabójcze studio i dał nam klucze do studia na kilka dni. Więc po prostu tam weszliśmy i nagraliśmy wszystko sami. Po prostu nacisnęliśmy przycisk „nagraj”. Najpierw nagraliśmy wszystkie utwory na perkusji i gitarach. Potem nagrałem bas, dodałem wszystkie solówki i inne melodie. A na końcu nagraliśmy wokale u Arilda. Jego sąsiedzi byli naprawdę szczęśliwi! 😉

Mam starego znajomego w Chile, który zrobił miks i mastering za 666 USD. Zrozumiał, czego oczekujemy od brzmienia albumu. Chcieliśmy brzmieć czysto, ale nie sterylnie, trochę ponuro, ale nie aż tak ostro. Chcieliśmy, żeby ten album miał porządne, undergroundowe brzmienie. Tylko ludzie ze specjalnym, undergroundowym gustem i parą zgniłych uszu zrozumieją, co chcieliśmy stworzyć! Pieprzyć trendy i wypolerowany „black metal”.

– Czy nowym zespołom łatwo jest dołączyć do norweskiej sceny black metalowej w dzisiejszych czasach?

Arild: Myślę, że tak. Jeśli ma się gitarę i domowe studio, każdy może wydawać muzykę w dzisiejszych czasach. Myślę, że stało się to zbyt łatwe!

– Czy w Norwegii nadal jest duże zainteresowanie black metalem?

Arild: Tak. Powiedziałbym, że tak. Nadal jest Inferno Metal Festival, który prawie co roku się wyprzedaje, i kilka innych festiwali, które są dobrze znane i myślę, że scena jest nadal bardzo żywa.

– Jakieś ostatnie słowa do naszych czytelników?

Arild: Pozostańcie oldschoolowi i nie wierzcie w szum medialny. Ugh!
