ITHILRÅ – Wraithial Moonchant

I recently got my hands on a release by the American project Ithilrå and to be honest, it was an absolute shot in the dark, because this project is a completely new name on the black metal scene. It was created in 2023 on the initiative of Lorian, and the following year it released a demo and EP material, which we will devote more attention to today. The domestic Wolfspell Records is responsible for releasing 'Wraithial Moonchant’ on CD and cassette. There is also a tape released under the wings of Empty Pit Recordings.
The sounds recorded on 'Wraithial Moonchant’ from beginning to end strike with their cold and sinister atmosphere, and the raw performance leaves no illusions that this is an extreme performance. Of course, as for atmospheric black metal, there is also no shortage of melodic lines, which were created thanks to keyboard instruments. This makes the material more accessible and memorable. The medium tempos also perfectly affect the atmosphere of 'Wraithial Moonchant’. On the album we will find six compositions with a total duration exceeding twenty-eight minutes. Raw tremolo riffs are strongly associated with the Norwegian scene of the early nineties, while the synthesizers generate a large dose of dark ambient, which perfectly fits these sepulchral guitar riffs. On the other hand, the sound of the drums did not entirely suit me. The drums still manage this strong bass hit, but the cymbals sound as if they were covered with some material that effectively drowns them out. Of course, you can get used to it, but you are aware that it could have been recorded better. The vocals are maintained in an equally raw tone as the music. It is a screeching, strongly throaty and rough scream that does not succumb to fashionable melodic chants and jumping into a clean sound. The whole thing sounds like it was recorded a good thirty years ago… and such materials should be valued. I certainly won’t be putting this tape on the shelf anytime soon.

Niedawno wpadło mi w ręce wydawnictwo amerykańskiego projektu Ithilrå i mówiąc szczerze był to absolutny strzał w ciemno, ponieważ ów projekt to zupełnie nowa nazwa na black metalowej scenie. Powstał on w 2023 roku z inicjatywy Loriana, a w następnym roku wydał materiał demo oraz EP, której dzisiaj poświęcimy więcej uwagi. Za wydanie 'Wraithial Moonchant’ w wersji CD i kasetowej odpowiedzialna jest rodzima Wolfspell Records. Dostępna jest również taśma wydana pod skrzydłami Empty Pit Recordings.
Dźwięki zarejestrowane na 'Wraithial Moonchant’ od początku do końca uderzają swoją zimną i złowieszczą atmosferą, a surowe wykonanie nie pozostawia złudzeń, że jest to ekstremalne wykonanie. Oczywiście jak na atmosferyczny black metal nie zabrakło tu również linii melodyjnych, które zostały wykreowane za sprawą instrumentów klawiszowych. Sprawia to, że materiał ten jest bardziej przystępny i zapada w pamięć. Średnie tempa również doskonale wpływają na klimat 'Wraithial Moonchant’. Na krążku znajdziemy sześć kompozycji o łącznym czasie trwania przekraczającym dwadzieścia osiem minut. Surowe riffy tremolo mocno kojarzą się z norweską sceną z początku lat dziewięć dziesiątych, natomiast syntezatory generują sporo dawki dark ambientu, która doskonale pasuje do tych grobowych gitarowych riffów. Natomiast brzmienie perkusji nie do końca przypadło mi do gustu. Bębny jeszcze dają radę z tym mocnym basowym uderzeniem, ale talerze brzmią, jakby były osłonięte jakimś materiałem, który skutecznie je zagłusza. Oczywiście można się przyzwyczaić do tego, jednak pozostaje świadomość, że można było nagrać to lepiej. Wokal jest utrzymany w równie surowym tonie co muzyka. Jest to skrzekliwy, mocno gardłowy i chropowaty krzyk, który nie ulega modowym melodyjnym zaśpiewom i przeskakiwaniu w czyste brzmienie. Całość brzmi, jakby nagrano ją dobre trzydzieści lat temu… i takie materiały należy cenić. Z pewnością szybko na regał nie odłożę tej taśmy.
