ZØRZA – Hellven

I have to admit that I was reluctant to reach for the material of the guys from Zørza. This was largely due to discouragement with band names like Mgła, Gołoledź and similar names referring to atmospheric phenomena, which impose similarities in their work to these bands from the outset. In the case of Zørza – nothing could be further from the truth, because their music caught my ear quite quickly, which was sealed with a concert at a club in Toruń and their debut album, which is hard to part with. The band was formed in 2022 and has two materials to its credit – an EP and an album released in 2024 by Godz ov War Productions, and the core of the band is Kacper and Eryk, and recently Refur officially joined them.

’Hellven’ starts with an instrumental piece that is strangely calm, as if not even memorable, it takes on the image of 'calm before the storm’, because right after it there is a strong blow of instruments. This album consists of nine pieces with a total duration of almost forty-three minutes. This music is labeled as post-black metal, which seems unnecessary to me, because here it leans more towards atmospheric playing, and at the same time draws heavily from the depressive black metal of the 90s. Of course, we have a lot of new flavors here, such as quite sophisticated solo parts, which would fit just as well in a rock piece, but here it came out great. The melodies are perfectly balanced with the extreme sound, nothing here is exaggerated or sweet. The tempos are also varied. There are a lot of fast beats, but I also liked the slower ones a lot. There is a moment when the music reminds me of the sound of Lustre from old albums. The guitars play tremolo riffs efficiently, but there are also moments where these instruments change into a gentler sound, set on a clean channel, and in principle it is good that this process does not drag on and does not become boring. Now all that remains is to wait patiently for the next material from Zørza and the next, exciting concerts.

Muszę się przyznać, że ociągałem się z sięgnięciem po materiały chłopaków z Zørzy. Wynikało to w dużej mierze ze zniechęcenia nazwami zespołów jak Mgła, Gołoledź i tym podobne nazwy odnoszące się do zjawisk atmosferycznych, które z góry narzucają podobieństwa w twórczości do tych zespołów. W przypadku Zørzy – nic bardziej mylnego, bo ich muzyka dość szybko wpadła mi w ucho, co przypieczętowało koncertem w toruńskim klubie i ich debiutanckim albumem, z którym ciężko jest się rozstać. Zespół powstał w 2022 roku i na koncie mają dwa materiały – EP-kę i album wydany w 2024 roku przez Godz ov War Productions, a trzon zespołu stanowią Kacper i Eryk, a od niedawna już oficjalnie dołączył do nich Refur.

’Hellven’ rozpoczyna się instrumentalnym utworem, który jest dziwnie spokojny, jakby nawet nie wbijający się w pamięć, przybiera on obraz ‘ciszy przed burzą’, bo zaraz po nim jest mocne uderzenie instrumentów. Na album ten składa się dziewięć utworów o łącznym czasie trwania wynoszącym blisko czterdzieści trzy minuty. Muzyka ta ma przypiętą łatkę jako post-black metal, co wydaje mi się zbędne, bo tu bardziej ciągnie w stronę atmosferycznego grania, a przy okazji czerpie garściami z depresyjnego black metalu z lat dziewięćdziesiątych. Jasne, że mamy tu sporo nowych smaczków, jak całkiem wyszukane partie solowe, które równie dobrze pasowałyby do jakiegoś rockowego utworu, ale i tu wyszło to znakomicie. Świetnie zrównoważone są melodie z ekstremalnym brzmieniem, nic tu nie jest przesadzone czy przesłodzone. Tempa również mamy zróżnicowane. Jest sporo szybkich uderzeń, ale te wolniejsze też mi się bardzo spodobały. Jest taki moment, że muzyka przypomina mi brzmienie Lustre z dawnych albumów. Gitary sprawnie wygrywają riffy tremolo, ale nie zabrakło tu również momentów, gdzie instrumenty te przechodzą w łagodniejsze brzmienie, ustawione na czystym kanale i w zasadzie dobre jest to, że ten proces się nie przeciąga i nie staje się nudny. Teraz pozostaje tylko cierpliwie czekać na kolejny materiał Zørzy oraz kolejne, emocjonujące koncerty.
