Turkey’s BURIAL INVOCATION has managed to get us used to a very sparse number of their releases. In the fourteen years of their existence, they have earned an EP, a split 7” with Anatomy and the debut album in question, which was released in 2018. Time passes inexorably, and when this album came out, I had satisfaction written on my facial expression saying – it was worth the wait. I return to the material regularly, it is truly an amazing album.

I am convinced that in the case of 'Abiogenesis’ we can talk about the phenomenon of atmospheric, full of climate and complex Death Metal. The patch 'atmospheric’ is associated with keyboards, various wonders on a stick, and you won’t find that here, fortunately. Atmospheric in the case of BURIAL INVOCATION is the way this band has created sounds, how they unfold in building the songs. They surround the listener with each passing minute, taking him on a journey full of transcendence, primordial energy and complex songs, expressing, in a way, the musicians’ craft and their unconventional vision.

From the above it might seem that we are even dealing here with some kind of progressive alternative, in which some substitutes of Death Metal remain – which is not the case. The music contained on 'Abiogenesis’ is thoroughly embedded and deep in this style, but it does not shy away from unconventional solutions either. It is soulful, and at the same time multidimensional. The changes of speed, the multitude of what happens here, is gorgeous. There are many classic riffs here, but there are just as many solutions that are broad in their vision and deviate from the classics. Quite a few parts are based on lead guitars divided into two channels of playing, excellent solo guitar parts, a lot of twisted, unearthly melodies. There will also be guitar parts without overdrive, introducing some respite, but also anticipation of what will happen next. This journey doesn’t even end.

The heavy sound further contributes to the solid foundation of these listens. The heaviness, but nevertheless the structures of the guitars here build a huge amount of space. There’s no fooling either, and it must be said that the sound is clean and definitely based on the standards of the present time. However, an element of stiffness is introduced here every time we hear vocals. These, associated with Disma or even Incantation, introduce a dose of anxiety, darkness and sulfur straight from Hell. The rhythm section is also worth mentioning. More than once and more than twice, the drum tracks fall into jazzy, as if improvised parts, and tempo breaking occurs several times. Importantly – and I’m saying this for the n-th time – this technique is given in an accessible way and listens deliciously.

At the very end, I will say that the album is a combination between what we know from Death 'Human’ and the current facade of Death Metal known for example from the achievements of Tomb Mold or Blood Incantation. I must also give credit to BURIAL INVOCATION that basing the album on the theme of abiogenesis, namely self-creation, has succeeded 100%, and the journey in sounds that the Turks have treated us to reflects this to the highest degree. Of course, in addition to this theme, we will come across a fair amount of occultism, which has been woven into the lyrics. The aspect of how important the lyrics are to the music is highlighted here in each song, and shows how the two elements make a whole. In conclusion, anyone who doesn’t know should catch up, as the album is 100% worth it.

Turecki BURIAL INVOCATION zdążył nas przyzwyczaić do bardzo skąpej ilości swoich wydawnictw. Przez czternaście lat istnienia dorobili się Epki, splitu 7’’ z Anatomia oraz omawianego debiutu, który został wydany w 2018 roku. Czas mija nieubłaganie i kiedy to ten album się ukazał, miałem satysfakcję wypisaną na mimice mojej twarzy mówiącą – warto było czekać. Do materiału wracam regularnie, jest to naprawdę niesamowity album.

Jestem przekonany, że w przypadku ‘Abiogenesis’ możemy mówić o zjawisku atmosferycznego, bardzo klimatycznego oraz złożonego Death Metalu. Łatka ‘atmosferyczny’ kojarzy się z klawiszami, różnymi cudami na kiju, a tego tu nie znajdziemy, na całe szczęście. Atmosferyczność w przypadku BURIAL INVOCATION to sposób w jaki ten zespół wykreował dźwięki, jak one się rozwijają w budowaniu utworów. Otaczają słuchacza z każdą kolejną minutą, zabierając go w podróż pełną transcendencji, pierwotnej energii i kompleksowych utworów, wyrażających poniekąd warsztat muzyków i ich nietuzinkową wizję.

Z powyższego mogłoby wynikać, że mamy tu do czynienia wręcz z jakąś progresywną alternatywą, w której pozostały raptem namiastki Death Metalu – a tak nie jest. Muzyka zawarta na ‘Abiogenesis’ jest na wskroś osadzona i to głęboko w tej stylistyce, ale nie stroni też od nietuzinkowych rozwiązań. Jest duszna, a zarazem wielowymiarowa. Zmiany szybkości, mnogość tego, co tu się dzieje, jest cudowna. Znajdziemy tu wiele klasycznych riffów, ale jest tu równie wiele rozwiązań szerokich w swej wizji i odstających od klasyki. Sporo partii opiera się na gitarach prowadzących podzielonych na dwa kanały grania, wyśmienite partie gitar solowych, sporo pokręconych, nieziemskich melodii. Pojawią się też partie gitar bez przesteru, wprowadzając pewne wytchnienie, ale i też wyczekiwanie, co się wydarz jako kolejne. Ta podróż się wręcz nie kończy.

Ciężkie brzmienie dodatkowo wpływa na solidne podstawy te słuchowiska. Ciężar, ale jednak struktury gitar budują tu olbrzymią przestrzeń. Nie ma się też co oszukiwać i trzeba to powiedzieć, że brzmienie jest czyste i zdecydowanie opiera się o standardy czasów teraźniejszych. Jednakże, element duchoty zostaje tu wprowadzony za każdym razem, gdy tylko usłyszymy wokale. Te, kojarzące się z Disma czy choćby Incantation, wprowadzają dozę niepokoju, ciemności i siarki prosto z Piekieł. Warto jeszcze wspomnieć o sekcji rytmicznej. Nie raz i nie dwa, ścieżki perkusji wpadają w jazzujące, jakby improwizowane partie, a łamanie tempa następuje kilkukrotnie. Co ważne – i powtarzam to już n-ty raz – ta technika została podana w przystępny sposób i słucha się tego wybornie.

Na sam koniec powiem, że album jest połączeniem pomiędzy tym, co znamy z Death ‘Human’ a obecna fasadą Death Metalu znaną choćby z dokonania Tomb Mold lub Blood Incantation. Muszę również oddać BURIAL INVOCATION, że oparcie albumu na tematyce abiogenezy, czyli samorództwa, udało się w 100%, a podróż w dźwiękach jakie nam zgotowali Turcy, oddaje to w najwyższym stopniu. Oczywiście poza tą tematyką natkniemy się na sporą część okultyzmu, który został wpleciony w liryki. Aspekt tego, jak ważne są teksty w muzyce, został tu podkreślony w każdym z utworów i pokazuje, jak oba elementy tworzą całość. Podsumowując, kto nie zna, winien nadrobić, bo album jest tego w 100% wart.
