WAR POSSESSION – Doomed to Chaos

In 2017, the debut from the Greeks of WAR POSSESSION saw the light of day, thanks to Spanish publisher Memento Mori. It’s classic, low-tuned Death Metal that I return to regularly. Before recording the album, however, the gentlemen released three smaller releases and these are, in turn, a demo, an EP and a split with Respawn the Plague (the vocalist’s band). The lineup includes personae from Embrace of Thorns or the lesser-known Mercielss Crucifixion (it’s a shame that the horde has been on hiatus for years), among others. I regret that silence is currently breathing from the Greeks’ camp, and I personally have high hopes that the band will return with a second album.
Ten tracks and almost forty minutes of music. Music that is powerful, simple to listen to and skyrocketing in its weight. 'Doomed to Chaos’ is a material that does not set itself to let one of its elements lead the way. Here the whole thing absolutely interlocks, and the titular chaos drills us under the domes of our skulls. And despite the fact that WAR POSSESSION is Death Metal, one can’t help but notice Black Metal influences in the guitar riffs or the spirit of the first Archgoat albums passing here and there.
Guitar riffs include tremolo melodics as well as playing on more open strings. It’s not uncommon to hear sawed chords, and there will also be splits into two tracks, i.e. lead guitar and rhythm guitar or muffled riffs. The overall sound is easy to listen to, although with the blasting parts you have to strain your ear a bit more for the served guitar sounds, because unfortunately they are slightly lost under the shroud of rumbling drums. The drums sound overly powerful here, and the bass guitar lines have been laid down quite a bit to boost the dynamics of the latter’s work. The vocalist, whose growl timbre even shakes the walls of the mausoleum called WAR POSSESSION, did a very good job. I mentioned Archgoat above, but it’s hard not to notice the main inspirations here like Bolt Thrower, Incantation or Swedish riffs a’la Demonical.
’Doomed to Chaos’ manages to sound coarse, clumsy in its old school Death Metal. This tomb definitely hasn’t been aired in many years, and the mustiness of the old sounds is great intensity. For many, including me, this is enough. Is it an exceptional album? No. However, herein lies the difference, that it never aimed to be such. This is simply Death Metal of the old school and is destined to remain so. The second league is doing great, and I look forward to the next hit from WAR POSSESSION.

W 2017 roku, dzięki hiszpańskiemu wydawcy Memento Mori, światło dzienne ujrzał debiut Greków z WAR POSSESSION. Klasyczny, nisko zestrojony Death Metal, do którego wracam regularnie. Zanim jednak panowie nagrali album, wydali trzy mniejsze wydawnictwa i są to kolejno: demo, Epka i split z Respawn the Plague (zespół wokalisty). W skład wchodzą persony m.in. z Embrace of Thorns czy mniej znanego Mercielss Crucifixion (szkoda, że horda jest w zawieszeniu od lat). Ubolewam, że obecnie wieje ciszą z obozu Greków i osobiście mam wielką nadzieję, że zespół wróci z drugim albumem.
Dziesięć utworów i prawie czterdzieści minut muzyki. Muzyki potężnej, prostej w odbiorze i rażącej swym ciężarem. ‘Doomed to Chaos’ to materiał nie nastawiający się by jeden z jego elementów wiódł prym. Tutaj całość się absolutnie zazębia, a tytułowy chaos wwierca się nam pod kopuły czaszek. I pomimo że WAR POSSESSION to Death Metal, to nie można nie zauważyć naleciałości Black Metalu w riffach gitar czy przemykającego tu i ówdzie ducha pierwszych albumów Archgoat.
Riffy gitar to zarówno melodyka tremolo, jak i gra na bardziej otwartych strunach. Nie z rzadka usłyszymy piłowane akordy, zdarzą się też podziały na dwie ścieżki, czyli gitarę prowadzącą oraz rytmiczną. Całokształt jest łatwy w odbiorze, aczkolwiek przy blastujących partiach trzeba nieco bardziej wytężyć ucho na serwowane dźwięki gitar, bo niestety z lekka giną pod całunem dudniących bębnów. Perkusja brzmi tu nader potężnie, a linie gitary basowej zostały dość mocno ułożone by podbijać dynamikę pracy tejże. Bardzo dobrze spisał się wokalista, którego barwa growlu wręcz trzęsie murami mauzoleum o nazwie WAR POSSESSION. Wspomniałem powyżej o Archgoat, ale trudno nie zauważyć tu głównych inspiracji jak Bolt Thrower, Incantation czy też szwedzkich riffów a’la Demonical.
‘Doomed to Chaos’ potrafi zabrzmieć siermiężnie, topornie w swoim old schoolowym Death Metalu. Ten grobowiec zdecydowanie nie był wietrzony od wielu lat, a stęchlizna starych dźwięków jest wielce intensywna. Dla wielu, w tym i mnie to wystarczy. Czy jest to album wybitny? Nie. Jednakże, tu tkwi ta różnica, że nigdy nie celował by takim być. To jest po prostu Death Metal starej szkoły i takim ma zostać. Druga liga ma się świetnie i czekam na kolejne uderzenie od WAR POSSESSION.
