ILLUMINATION – Worship Death More Than Life

ILLUMINATION hails from Brazil and their music revolves around Black Metal full of atmosphere. The band has so far only released a demo and the EP in question, which was handled by Personal Records from Mexico.
Nowadays, the term Atmospheric Black Metal is mainly associated with keyboards, creating an aura related to evoking the power of Nature or the Cosmos or similar themes, of which there are many more. It’s not often that a band limits itself to basic instrumentation without keyboards and, on top of that, comes out of such an action with its brow raised proudly. That’s what can be safely said about 'Worship Death More Than Life’ by the Brazilians. The trio moves unceremoniously in a sepulchral aura, and the title of the EP itself perfectly reflects the sonic content of the CD.
The material is definitely based on the contrast of fuzzy, lightly hidden riffs – in which, incidentally, there is a lot going on – and excellent growls interspersed with a shouting manner akin to standard black metal vocalizations. A big role is played here by the non-trivially set sound. The guitars are just sort of stifled, covered with a thick layer of dirt. This creates the impression as if we were in an actual crypt surrounded by open coffins and sarcophagi, with sick sounds coming from somewhere behind them. There’s a lot of tremolo, but ILLUMINATION will also present tracks of guitars without overdrive, acoustic parts (!!!!), slow chord playing (falling into the aesthetics of Doom Metal), and staccato full of twisted solutions. When you add drums and bass guitar, it’s easy to see that the whole thing has a very analog sound. The songs are full, arranged comprehensively. And as much as I don’t like too many combinations in Black Metal, ILLUMINATION won and bought me with this material.
I also mentioned that 'Worship Death More Than Life’ is devoid of keyboard instruments. This is not entirely true, as I used a thought shortcut. In the actual 'metal’ compositions, this instrument is missing, it’s true. However, in interludes, shorter forms, they appear and deign the ear with interesting samples. One could say that the music of the Brazilians fills one with sadness, a certain nostalgia. There is a lot of this emotion in the guitar riffs, but personally and fortunately for me, this element does not dominate the musical form of ILLUMINATION. A specific material, leaving a fair amount of dissonance, demanding and uncomplimentary. So, it remains for me to recommend it sincerely.

ILLUMINATION pochodzą z Brazylii i ich muzyka obraca się wokół Black Metalu pełnego atmosfery. Zespół do tej pory wydał jedynie demo i omawianą Epkę, której to wydania podjęła się się Personal Records z Meksyku.
Obecnie pojęcie Atmospheric Black Metalu kojarzone jest przede wszystkim z klawiszami, kreowaniem aury związanej opiewaniem potęgi Natury, tudzież Kosmosu lub podobnych tematów, których jest o wiele więcej. Rzadziej zdarza się by zespół ograniczał się do podstawowego instrumentarium bez klawiszy i na dodatek wychodził z takiej akcji z podniesionym dumnie czołem. Tak można śmiało powiedzieć o ‘Worship Death More Than Life’ autorstwa Brazylijczyków. Trio porusza się bezceremonialnie w grobowej aurze, a sam tytuł Epki idealnie odzwierciedla zawartość dźwiękową krążka CD.
Materiał zdecydowanie opiera się na kontraście rozmytych, schowanych z lekka riffów – w których notabene dzieje się bardzo, ale to bardzo wiele – i wyśmienitych growlach przeplatanych z manierą krzyczaną zbliżoną do standardowych wokaliz black metalowych. Dużą rolę odgrywa tu niebanalnie ustawione brzmienie. Gitary są właśnie jakby stłamszone, przykryte gęstą warstwą brudu. Stwarza to wrażenie jakbyśmy przebywali w faktycznej krypcie w otoczeniu otwartych trumien i sarkofagów, a chore dźwięki wydobywały się gdzieś zza nich. Dużo tu tremolo, ale ILLUMINATION zaprezentuje też ścieżki gitar bez przesteru, akustycznych partii (!!!!), powolnej gry akordami (wpadających w estetykę Doom Metalu), oraz staccato pełnych pokręconych rozwiązań. Gdy dorzucimy perkusję i gitarę basową, łatwo można zauważyć, że całość ma bardzo analogowe brzmienie. Utwory są pełne, zaaranżowane kompleksowo. I tak jak nie lubię za wielu kombinacji w Black Metalu, tak ILLUMINATION wygrał i kupił mnie tym materiałem.
Wspomniałem też, że ‘Worship Death More Than Life’ jest pozbawiony instrumentów klawiszowych. Nie do końca jest to prawda, bo użyłem skrótu myślowego. W faktycznych ‘metalowych’ kompozycjach, tego instrumentu brakuje, to prawda. Jednakże, w interludiach, krótszych formach, pojawiają się i raczą ucho ciekawymi samplami. Można by stwierdzić, że muzyka Brazylijczyków napawa smutkiem, pewną nostalgią. W riffach gitar jest sporo tych emocji, ale osobiście i na szczęście dla mnie, ten pierwiastek nie zdominował formy muzycznej ILLUMINATION. Konkretny materiał, pozostawiający sporą ilość dysonansu, wymagający i nieprzekombinowany. A zatem, pozostaje mi go szczerze polecić.
