Jedyne co po sobie zostawił VEMOD z Trondheim, Norwegia, to nagranie ‘Demo 1998’. Materiał został wznowiony przez Iron Bonehead Productions na CD oraz NWN! Records na formacie winylowym, dwukrotnie.
Dwadzieścia jeden minut, bo tyle trwa ten materiał, to przy muzyce jaką tu usłyszymy, zdecydowanie za mało. Dwa bracia, którzy nagrali demo i stanowili VEMOD za jego żywota, dokonali tu naprawdę świetnej roboty. Black Metal z jakim się tu zetkniemy jest w całości oparty o kreowanie atmosfery poprzez instrumenty klawiszowe, a z drugiej strony daleko mi do nazwania muzyki zawartej na ‘Demo 1998’ Symfonicznym Black Metalem. Materia dźwięków zaprasza nas na niemałe show. Odniosłem silne wrażenie, że te pięć utworów to niemal akty w sztuce teatralnej czy może i operze. Oczywiście, VEMOD daleki był od sięgania po stricte elementy takich stylistyk, ale jakiś pierwiastek natury tychże pozostał.
‘Demo 1998’ jest materiałem surowym. Przez wykorzystanie klawiszy, ta surowość nie jest na pierwszym planie, co może i dobrze się stało, ponieważ można się skupić na słuchaniu materiału jako całości, zamiast wygrzebywaniu poszczególnych jego partii spod topornego brzmienia. Instrumenty klawiszowe fantastycznie operują emocjami, a sam odbiorca ma wrażenie jakby rzeczywiście uczestniczył w swego rodzaju teatralnej dramaturgii.
Pewnego rodzaju minusem jest automat perkusyjny, który no cóż… brzmi jak automat perkusyjny z lat 90tych. Stuka, terkocze imitacją podwójnej stopy, ale ma to swój nostalgiczny urok. I cóż, po raz drugi, pasuje on do wampirycznego klimatu jaki spoziera z muzyki Norwegów. Słucham tego materiału już nie wiem który raz z rzędu, ile razy słuchałem go poprzednio też nie pomnę, ale jest na swój sposób unikalny. Wampiryzm połączony z zimową aurą. Ciekawym zabiegiem jest trzeci utwór ‘Vixi’, mocno Doomowy, ponury i pasujący mi go klimatu jaki stworzyli Finowie z Unholy na albumie ‘The Second Ring of Power’.
Perełka z przeszłości, o której zapewne mniej osób wiedziało, niż wie obecnie. Mam cichą, ale pewnie złudną nadzieję, że może dwaj bracia powrócą któregoś dnia i powalą nas na kolana pełnowymiarowym albumem. Tego życzę zarówno wam i sobie.

The only thing VEMOD, from Trondheim, Norway, left behind was the 'Demo 1998′ recording. The material has been reissued by Iron Bonehead Productions on CD and NWN! Records on vinyl format, twice.
Twenty-one minutes, because that’s how long the material is, is far too little with the music we’ll hear here. The two brothers, who recorded the demo and constituted VEMOD during its lifetime, have done a really great job here. The Black Metal we encounter here is entirely based on the creation of atmosphere through keyboards, and on the other hand, I am far from calling the music contained on 'Demo 1998′ Symphonic Black Metal. The matter of sounds invites us to a not inconsiderable show. I got the strong impression that these five tracks are almost acts in a theater play or perhaps an opera. Of course, VEMOD was far from reaching for strictly elements of such styles, but some piece of the nature of them remained.
’Demo 1998′ is raw material. Through the use of keyboards, this rawness is not in the foreground, which is perhaps a good thing, since one can focus on listening to the material as a whole, instead of picking out individual parts of it from under the clumsy sound. The keyboard instruments handle emotions fantastically, and the listener gets the impression of actually participating in a kind of theatrical drama.
A sort of downside is the drum machine, which, well… sounds like a drum machine from the 90s. It rattles with an imitation of a double pedal foot, but it certainly has its own nostalgic charm. And well, for the second time, it matches the vampiric atmosphere that oozes from the Norwegians’ music. I’m listening to this material for I don’t know which time in a row, how many times I listened to it before I can’t remember either, but it’s unique in its own way. Vampirism combined with winter aura. An interesting approach is the third track 'Vixi’, strongly Doom-like, gloomy and matching for me the atmosphere the Finns from Unholy created on the album 'The Second Ring of Power’.
A gem from the past that probably fewer people knew about than know about now. I have a quiet, but probably illusory, hope that maybe the two brothers will return one day and bring us to our knees with a full-length album. This is what I wish for both you and myself.
