DEVOURING FAMINE to projekt ze Stanów Zjednoczonych, słonecznej Kalifornii. Jak zatem widać, nie w każdej części tego stanu świeci słońce, a wręcz odwrotnie. Są miejsca, gdzie zalega ciągły mrok, a mizantropia jest przewodnikiem dnia codziennego.
‘Merge in to Oblivion’ to drugi album Amerykanina. Czterdzieści minut wspomnianej mizantropii zaklętej w siedmiu kompozycjach, jest niewiarygodnie dojrzałe i świetne od strony kompozycyjnej. Materiał jest zdecydowanie z półki surowego Black Metalu, ale nie jest to hałaśliwe, brzęczące. Brzmienie zostało poddane całkiem dobrej obróbce i został zachowany balans między surowością, prymitywną energią, a selektywnością instrumentów.
Aranżacje są, rzekłbym, nawet nieco progresywne. Mowa tu o Black Metalu, więc ta progresywność też jest ograniczona pewnym limitem granic gatunku. Album ten przynosi też elementy Doom Metalu, większego nacisku na atmosferę i ekspozycję emocji, nie tylko związanych z oczywistą nienawiścią czy pogardą. Mając też z tyłu głowy fakt, że muzyka jawi się wampirycznym klimatem, to ów progresja, jest też przynajmniej zadziwiająca. W szczególności na uwagę zasługują partie gitary basowej, często wypuszczane jako jedynie wybrzmiewający instrument. Taki zabieg kojarzy mi się z debiutanckim albumem Fleurety ‘Min tid skal komme’. Kto zna, ten wie o czym mowa.
Nazywanie muzyki DEVOURING FAMINE jedynie Black Metalem, to w moim odczuciu nieco za mało. Album jest pełen, poza Doom Metalem o którym już wspomniałem, rozwiązań pochodzących z innych gatunków muzyki. Znalazły się tu riffy trochę thrashujące, jest też kropla Death Metalu i oczywiście Psychodelicznego Rocka. Zestawienie to, to olbrzymia porcja doskonałej muzyki, strawa obok której nie można przejść obojętnie. Oczywiście, fundamentem tego wszystkiego jest Black Metal.
Podsumowując – materiał godzien polecenia. Zdaję sobie sprawę, że materiał może nie przypaść wszystkim do gustu ze względu na rozpiętość stylistyczną, ale to już jakoby nie mój problem, hehe. Mimo tego, uważam, że należy dać ‘Merge in to Oblivion’ zdecydowaną szansę oraz bacznie obserwować ten projekt. Kto wie, może w przyszłości padniemy ponownie ofiarami zaskoczenia przez muzykę Amerykanina.

DEVOURING FAMINE is a project from the United States, sunny California. So, as you can see, the sun does not shine in every part of this state, quite the opposite. There are places where constant darkness prevails, and misanthropy is the guide of everyday life.
’Merge in to Oblivion’ is the American’s second album. Forty minutes of the aforementioned misanthropy enchanted in seven compositions, it is incredibly mature and great on the compositional side. The material is definitely from the shelf of raw Black Metal, but it’s not noisy, buzzing. The sound has been treated quite well and a balance has been struck between rawness, primitive energy and instrument selectivity.
The arrangements are, I would say, even somewhat progressive. We’re talking about Black Metal here, so this progressiveness is also limited by a certain limit of the genre’s boundaries. The album also brings elements of Doom Metal, a greater emphasis on atmosphere and exposure of emotions, not only those related to obvious hatred or contempt. Having also in the back of one’s mind the fact that the music appears to have a vampiric atmosphere, this progression, is also at least astonishing. Particularly noteworthy are the bass guitar parts, often released as merely a fuzzed-out instrument. I associate this kind of treatment with Fleurety’s debut album 'Min tid skal komme’. Those who know it know what they are talking about.
Calling DEVOURING FAMINE’s music only Black Metal is, in my opinion, a bit too little. The album is full of, in addition to the Doom Metal I already mentioned, solutions from other genres of music. There are some thrashing riffs, there is also a dash of Death Metal and, of course, Psychedelic Rock. The juxtaposition is a huge portion of excellent music, a feast that cannot be passed by indifferently. Of course, the foundation of all this is Black Metal.
To sum up – the material is worth recommending. I realize that the material may not appeal to everyone because of the stylistic range, but that’s supposedly not my problem, hehe. Nevertheless, I think you should give 'Merge in to Oblivion’ a definite chance and keep a close eye on this project. Who knows, maybe in the future we’ll fall prey to surprise by the American’s music again.
