Szczerze mówiąc, nie wiedziałem czego spodziewać się po rosyjskim zespole MORGENSTERN. Formacja nie ma długiego stażu, gdyż powstała w 2017 roku, a pierwszy materiał ukazał się trzy lata później. Następny – tym razem już debiutancki album, ukazał się na taśmie pod skrzydłami ukraińskiej wytwórni Bloodred Distribution w 2021 i w roku następnym w wersji CD w rodzimej Werewolf Promotion. Album dedykowany jest Philippowi Shipilov – zmarłemu artyście, twórcy okładek, który był jest również ojcem wokalisty / gitarzysty MORGENSTERN, Daniila.
Jak już wspomniałem we wstępie, ciężko było się spodziewać czym mnie zaskoczy ten album, a okazało się, że już pierwszym utworem nieźle mną sponiewierał. Na materiał zaprezentowano cztery utwory, o łącznym czasie trwania wynoszącym równe trzydzieści dziewięć minut, które w dziwny sposób zbyt szybko umykają. Do produkcji albumu przyłożono duży nacisk, dzięki czemu jest bardzo przejrzysta, a przy szybkich partiach perkusji i gitar, instrumenty nie zagłuszają się. Każda ścieżka idealnie współgra ze sobą. Taki black metal wykonywany przez MORGENSTERN to esencja mroku, agresji i bezkresnej otchłani, która jest gotowa pożreć każdą duszę. Atmosfera muzyczna jest gęsta od riffów tremolo, które są bezlitosne i chociaż można w nich odnaleźć melodię, to nie napawa ona pozytywnymi emocjami. Pomiędzy riffami wpleciono od czasu do czasu, równie szybkie partie solowe, zagrane z chirurgiczną precyzją. Gitara basowa jakby nieco ociepla to i tak chłodne dzieło, nadaje głębi i poprawia dynamikę. Natomiast dodane sample i syntezatory, które nie są akurat dominującymi elementami, kreują zimną atmosferę. Perkusja zdecydowanie odzwierciedla gniewne nastroje. Uwielbiam, gdy w szybkich tempach nie pozostawia złudzeń, że tu nie ma miejsca na przyjemności, tylko na konkretny wpierdol. Oczywiście są takie momenty, gdy dochodzi do zwolnień, jednak tu również atmosfera jest bardzo sroga i napięta, przypomina to zbieranie sił do zadania kolejnego ciosu. Wokal jest chropowaty, wypełniony jadem i pełen wściekłości, ale to co może w nim jeszcze zaskoczyć, to ta łatwość w przejściu do czystych partii wokalnych, w który pojawia się więcej melodii, jednak są one utrzymane w nieco mistycznej atmosferze, która wpływa na rejony psychodeliczne. Z jednej strony zabija, a z drugiej hipnotyzuje i zapada w pamięć na długo. Jeżeli ten album to tylko zapowiedź czegoś większego, to już nie mogę się doczekać kolejnej jego części. Oczywiście polecam zapoznać się z muzyką MORGENSTERN.

To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect from the Russian band MORGENSTERN. The formation does not have a long history, as it was formed in 2017 and its first material was released three years later. The next – this time already a debut album, was released on tape under the wings of the Ukrainian label Bloodred Distribution in 2021 and the following year in a CD version on the native Werewolf Promotion. The album is dedicated to Philipp Shipilov – the late artist and cover artist, who was also the father of MORGENSTERN singer/guitarist Daniil.
As I mentioned in the introduction, it was hard to expect what this album would surprise me with and it turned out that already with the first song, it pretty much pummeled me. The material presents four tracks, with a total duration of equal to thirty-nine minutes, which strangely enough escape all too quickly. A lot of emphasis has been put on the album’s production, making it very clear, and with fast drum and guitar parts, the instruments do not drown each other out. Each track harmonizes perfectly with each other. Such black metal performed by MORGENSTERN is the essence of darkness, aggression and boundless abyss that is ready to devour every soul. The musical atmosphere is thick with tremolo riffs that are merciless, and although a melody can be found in them, it does not fill one with positive emotions. In between the riffs are woven from time to time, equally fast solo parts, played with surgical precision. The bass guitar seems to warm up this already cool work a bit, adds depth and improves dynamics. On the other hand, the added samples and synths, which are not acerbic dominant elements, create a cold atmosphere. The drums definitely reflect the angry mood. I love it when, in fast tempos, it leaves no illusion that there is no room for pleasure here, only for a definite pounding. Of course, there are moments when there are slowdowns, nevertheless, here too the atmosphere is very harsh and tense, reminiscent of gathering strength to deal another blow. The vocals are harsh, venom-filled and full of rage, but what can still surprise in it is this ease of transition to clean vocal parts, in which more melodies appear, but these are kept in a somewhat mystical atmosphere that affects psychedelic regions. On the one hand, it kills, and on the other, it mesmerizes and falls into memory for a long time. If this album is just a harbinger of something bigger, I’m already looking forward to its next installment. Of course, I recommend getting acquainted with MORGENSTERN’s music.
