Takich nazw zespołów, jak ARKONA nie trzeba przedstawiać, bo na black metalowej scenie jest to żywa legenda. Koncertów z ich udziałem nigdy nie zapomnę, a i twórczość ARKONY wciąż tkwi we mnie, bo takich dzieł jak ‘Imperium’, ‘Konstelacja Lodu’ czy wydanego w 2016 roku ‘Lunaris’ nie słucha się raz i odstawia na półkę, tylko zapętla się albumy w nieskończoność i powraca się do nich po jakimś czasie, co świadczy o nieśmiertelności tej muzyki i wciąż aktualnych brzmieniach. Zespół powstał w 1993 roku, a jego skład ulegał wielokrotnym zmianom. Do tej pory ukazało się siedem albumów i kilka mniejszych wydawnictw. W dzisiejszej recenzji skupimy się na materiale demo z 1994 roku, który został wznowiony przez Old Temple.

Bardzo ucieszyło mnie to, że postanowiono wznowić ten wiekowy już mteriał. Przyznam się, że dawno nie słyszałem tego demo. Najczęściej wracałem do słuchania ‘Imperium’, a kompozycje na ‘An Eternal Curse of the Pagan Godz’ bardzo mocno są zbliżone brzmieniowo do tego co słychać na debiutanckim albumie. Na krążku znalazło się dziewięć utworów o łącznym czasie trwania wynoszącym blisko trzydzieści osiem minut. Kompozycje, które usłyszymy to chory, surowy i szybki black metal z dość prostymi epickimi melodiami, które kreują niepowtarzalny klimat wypełniony lodowatym zimnem i nienawiścią do chrześcijańskiego boga. W materii muzycznej nie da się ukryć, że jest zainspirowana norweskim black metalem. Riffy gitar kreują mroczne melodie za pomocą kostkowania tremolo. Pojawia się również mocniejsze uderzenie w postaci trzeszczących akordów. Ścieżki gitar są perfekcyjnie uzupełnione klawiszowymi pasażami, które z jednej strony są nośnikiem melodii, a z drugiej mają olbrzymi wpływ na klimat tego materiału, który przynosi zimno. Podobnie jest z wokalem, który jest maniakalny i również lodowaty, mający w sobie wielką nienawiść. Jest tak autentyczny, że aż się chce słuchać tego w nieskończoność, no i jak się okazuje nie da się zapomnieć głosu, za który odpowiedzialny jest Messiah. Perkusja świetnie spełnia się w szybkich tempach, co momentami brzmi jak deszcz spadających bomb, jednak najbardziej podoba mi się jej praca w nieco wolniejszych tempach, gdzie słychać jak perfekcyjnie przeplata się z innymi instrumentami. Jedyny minus tej płyty, to zbyt krótki czas jej trwania, ale jakoś da się to przeżyć. Wystarczy wcisnąć ponownie klawisz ‘play’ po skończonym odtwarzaniu. ‘An Eternal Curse of the Pagan Godz’ to pozycja obowiązkowa dla maniaków wczesnego black metalu.

Such band names as ARKONA need no introduction, as they are living legends in the black metal scene. Concerts with their participation I will never forget, and also ARKONA’s work still sticks in my mind, because such works as 'Empire’, 'Constellation of Ice’ or 'Lunaris’, released in 2016, are not listened to once and put on the shelf, but loop the albums endlessly and return to them after some time, which proves the immortality of this music and the ever-present sounds. The band was formed in 1993, and its lineup has changed many times. To date, it has released seven albums and several smaller releases. Today’s review will focus on the 1994 demo material, which was reissued by Old Temple.

I was very pleased that they decided to reissue this now age-old material. I must admit that it’s been a long time since I heard this demo. Mostly I went back to listen to 'Empire’, and the compositions on 'An Eternal Curse of the Pagan Godz’ are very close in sound to what is heard on the debut album. The album features nine tracks with a total duration of nearly thirty-eight minutes. The compositions we will hear are sick, raw and fast black metal with rather simple epic melodies that create a unique atmosphere filled with icy coldness and hatred of the Christian god. In terms of musical matter, there is no denying that it is inspired by Norwegian black metal. Guitar riffs create dark melodies with the help of tremolo dicing. A harder beat in the form of crackling chords also appears. The guitar tracks are perfectly complemented by keyboard passages, which on the one hand carry the melodies, and on the other have a huge impact on the atmosphere of this material, which brings coldness. The same is true of the vocals, which are manic and also icy, having great hatred in them. It’s so authentic that you want to listen to it over and over again, well, and as it turns out, it’s impossible to forget the voice Messiah is responsible for. The drums perform brilliantly in fast tempos, which at times sound like a rain of falling bombs, nevertheless I like their work the most in slightly slower tempos, where you can hear how perfectly they intertwine with other instruments. The only downside of this album is that its duration is too short, but somehow this can be survived. All you have to do is press the 'play’ key again when the playback is over. 'An Eternal Curse of the Pagan Godz’ is a must-have item for early black metal maniacs.
