W momencie, gdy piszę tą recenzję, VARDAN ma na swoim koncie 28 albumów. Przyznać trzeba, że facet jest twórczy, bo corocznie wychodzi kilka jego albumów wraz ze splitami czy sporadycznymi demami. Zapewne nie będzie mi dane poznanie całej dyskografii Włocha, ale akurat na ponurą pogodę za oknem, uważam ten album za bardzo trafiony. Początki powstania datuje się na 1997 rok, ale do 2004 roku VARDAN nie dał oficjalnego znaku życia. Demo nagrane i tak było jakby pojedynczym wyskokiem, ponieważ kolejne wydawnictwo – debiutancki album ukazał się w 2007. I tak z przerwami twórczymi dochodzimy do roku 2012, kiedy to VARDAN zaczął wręcz zasypywać podziemie kolejnymi wydawnictwami. Ile w tym jakości? O tym już poniżej, zapraszam.
Solowy projekt Włocha zaczął od stricte satanistycznego oblicza. Z czasem jednak, projekt zwrócił się ku bardziej depresyjnej formie ekspresji. Na tym wydawnictwie mamy jeszcze do czynienia z, nazwijmy to, pierwszym etapem projektu. „The Woods is my Coffin” można postrzegać w kategorii zimnego, surowego Black Metalu. Aranżacje są rozciągnięte, nie ma tutaj 5-cio minutowych strzałów, które wgniotą kogokolwiek w glebę. Nic z tych rzeczy. VARDAN stawia na długo i powolnie rozwijającą się atmosferę, ale przy użyciu podstawowego instrumentarium. I pomimo wskazania na owe dwa etapy twórczości, już debiutancki album „Hidden in a Tomb” był nacechowany smutkiem, a z dźwięków po dziś dzień płyną dysfunkcyjne emocje osoby, która wręcz gardzi ludzkością. Szósty pełen materiał o którym sobie teraz tu dywaguję, ma w sobie również sporo z tych elementów. Zacznijmy od tego, że większość materiału jest oparta na powolnych tempach, a każdy z instrumentów wręcz wyje anty ludzkim feelingiem. Patrząc też na aranżacje, nie może być inaczej – gdyby VARDAN uwijał się z setką pomysłów w jednym utworze, zdecydowanie nie otrzymalibyśmy takiej posępnej atmosfery. Riffy gitar są mocno prymitywne, opierające się na prostych melodiach i długiej powtarzalności gry poszczególnych dźwięków. Momentami pojawiają się partie bez przesterów. Wokale niczym nas nie zaskoczą – jednostajne Black Metalowe brudne skrzeki, które oczywiście pasują do wizji jaką stworzył Włoch na tym albumie.
„The Woods is my Coffin” to apogeum smutku. Pomimo tytułów utworów, które wskazują na Satanizm, to jednak górują tu emocje bliskie osobistej, wewnętrznej tragedii. A może to tylko ja tak odbieram tą muzykę? Zbadajcie ten projekt, posłuchajcie muzyki, bo według mnie naprawdę warto.

As I write this review, VARDAN has 28 albums to his credit. You have to admit that the guy is creative, as several of his albums come out every year, along with splits or occasional demos. I probably won’t get to know the entire discography of the Italian, but just for the gloomy weather outside the window, I find this album very relevant. The origins date back to 1997, but VARDAN didn’t give an official sign of life until 2004. The demos recorded were kind of a one-off anyway, as the next release – the debut album – came out in 2007. And so with creative breaks we come to 2012, when VARDAN even began to flood the underground with more releases. How much quality in this? About this already below.
The Italian’s solo project began with a strictly satanic face. Nevertheless, over time, the project turned to a more depressive form of expression. On this release we are still dealing with, let’s call it, the first stage of the project. „The Woods is my Coffin” can be seen in the category of cold, raw Black Metal. Arrangements are stretched out, there are no 5-minute shots here that will dent anyone in the ground. None of that. VARDAN relies on a long and slowly developing atmosphere, but using basic instrumentation. And despite pointing to these two stages of creativity, already the debut album „Hidden in a Tomb” was marked by sadness, and from the sounds to this day flow the dysfunctional emotions of a person who even despises humanity. The sixth full-length, which I’m now discussing here, also has quite a few of these elements in it. Let’s start with the fact that most of the material is based on slow tempos, with each instrument even howling with an anti-human feeling. Looking at the arrangements, too, it couldn’t be more different – if VARDAN would have wrangled a hundred ideas into one song, we definitely wouldn’t have gotten such a gloomy atmosphere. Guitar riffs are strongly primitive, based on simple melodies and long repetition of playing individual sounds. At times there are parts without overdrive. The vocals won’t surprise us with anything – monotonous Black Metal dirty screeches, which obviously fit the vision the Italian created on this album.
„The Woods is my Coffin” is the apogee of sadness. Despite song titles that hint at Satanism, emotions close to personal, inner tragedy nevertheless prevail here. Or is it just me who perceives this music this way? Check out this project, listen to the music, because in my opinion it’s really worth it.
