PAGANIZER – Beyond the Macabre

Rogga Johansson znany jest z mnogości swoich projektów już chyba każdemu fanowi Death Metalu. Tym razem pomówimy sobie o najnowszym albumie, bodaj jego najbardziej rozpoznawalnego zespołu, a mianowicie PAGANIZER. „Beyond the Macabre” to już dwunasty album Szwedów, pomiędzy którymi jest aż ciasno od pomniejszych wydawnictw i kompilacji. Death Metal z jakim zetkniemy się tutaj to nie jest w pełni old school, bardziej określiłbym ową stylistykę jako granie w ramach czasów obecnych wymieszanych właśnie z patentami osdm. Nie oznacza to, że znajdziemy tu spierdoliny w postaci naleciałości Deathcore czy innych popłuczyn. PAGANIZER stawia na melodyjne riffy oparte na sekcji tremolo, które często są mieszane z bardziej rytmicznym graniem. Mimo wszystko, to jednak melodyka partii gitar jest tu na pierwszym planie. Pojawiają się fragmenty z gitarami prowadzącymi, solowe partie i wszystko to jest zagrane bardzo zgrabnie – tak jak powinno być. Całokształt muzyki wydaje się być prosty, bez wielkich ozdobników lub prób znajdywania alternatywnych sposobów wyrażenia muzyki poza obraną stylistyką. Album brzmi ciężko (mimo szwedzkiego HM2 brzmienia), perkusja bardzo dobrze sprawdza się nie dominując swoimi partiami nad pozostałym instrumentarium. Być może brzmienie tego instrumentu jest za bardzo podkręcone studyjnie i pozbawione naturalnego dźwięku, ale to już kwestia gustu każdego z słuchaczy. Utwory są niejednakie, wielowarstwowo wykorzystujące każdą z możliwych szybkości gry. Owa mnogość sprawdza się całkiem dobrze, tym samym rozwija przestrzeń aranżacyjną w jakiej PAGANIZER się porusza. Wokalnie otrzymamy tu growle przemieszane z krzyczaną manierą wokalną, czyli mieszankę, którą wszyscy maniacy tego zespołu znają bardzo dobrze. Podsumowując na szybko, album sprzyja łatwemu słuchaniu, bez większych prób zagłębiania się w dźwięki. Czy to jednak zarzut? Nie wydaje mi się. Szwedzi od samego początku łupią prosty w odbiorze Death Metal. Tym razem dostaliśmy sporo melodii popartej ciężarem, dobrymi wokalami i niesamowitą okładką, która zdobi ten album.

Rogga Johansson is already known for his multitude of projects to probably every Death Metal fan. This time we’ll talk about the latest album by perhaps his most recognizable band, namely PAGANIZER. „Beyond the Macabre” is already the twelfth album of the Swedes between which is crammed with minor releases and compilations. Death Metal we will encounter here is not fully old school, I would more describe the style as playing within the framework of the current times mixed with osdm patents. This doesn’t mean that we’ll find here garbage in the form of Deathcore or other washouts. PAGANIZER relies on melodic riffs based on a tremolo section, which are often mixed with more rhythmic playing. Still, it is nevertheless the melodic nature of the guitar parts that is in the foreground here. There are passages with lead guitars, solo parts and it’s all played very neatly – as it should be. The music as a whole seems simple, with no great frills or attempts to find alternative ways of expressing the music outside of the chosen style. The album sounds heavy (despite the Swedish HM2 sound), the drums do a very good job of not dominating the rest of the instrumentation with their parts. Perhaps the sound of this instrument is too studio-amplified and lacks a natural sound, but this is a matter of each listener’s separate taste. The tunes are non-similar, multi-layered using every possible playing speed. This multiplicity works quite well, thus developing the arrangement space in which PAGANIZER moves. Vocally, we get growls mixed with shouted vocal mannerisms here, a mix that all fans of this band know very well. To sum up quickly, the album is conducive to easy listening, without much attempt to delve into the sounds. Is this a complain? I don’t think so. The Swedes have been ripping straightforward to listen to Death Metal from the very beginning. This time we got a lot of melody backed by heaviness, good vocals and an sick cover that adorns this album.
