O tym, że wydawnictwa ukazujące się pod szyldem Dark Adversary Productions trzymają wysoki poziom i nie zawodzą, nie trzeba chyba wspominać. Label ten, zarządzany przez głównodowodzącego Drowning the Light, przez lata raczy ciemne serca Black Metalową sztuką oraz Dark Ambientowymi rytuałami. VARW to nowy projekt pochodzący z Australii, którego debiutancki album ukazał się w 2021. Duet składa się z Greallacha i Balama, którego możemy kojarzyć choćby ze wspomnianego Drowning the Light, Pestilential Shadows czy Nazxul.
’Wights of the Barrow Fume’ to osiem utworów ułożonych w przemyślaną sekwencję i balansujących klimatem pomiędzy surowym, melodyjnym Black Metalem a utworami zaaranżowanymi wyłącznie na gitary akustyczne. VARW obrał sobie na cel mitologię celtycką i uważam, że taki zabieg z ułożeniem utworów w twardo trzymający się koncept wypadł bardzo, ale to bardzo dobrze. Zestawienie surowości utworów z pięknem i ciepłym brzmieniem gitar akustycznych pozostawia niesamowite wrażenie. Jest ono na tyle intensywne, iż ciężko się oderwać o materiału i nie słuchać go na okrągło. Co więcej, utwory stricte Black Metalowe nie są pozbawione klimatu. Melodyka nasuwa tu olbrzymi patos, znajdziemy również chórki o czystej tonacji głosów. Przede wszystkim jednak jest to niezmiernie gitarowy album. W czterech utworach o materii BM znajdziemy bardzo dobre rozwiązania aranżacyjne, ujmujące duszę melodie odnoszące się właśnie do celtyckiego feelingu. Kolejną zaletą jest fakt, że zespół nie sięgnął po dziwne folkowe instrumenty, a finalny efekt został osiągnięty wyłącznie za sprawą podstawowego instrumentarium 'metalowego’. Utwory są bardzo dynamicznie napisane, czuć w nich motorykę wokół której powstały i się rozwijają by następnie przejść we wspaniałe pasaże gitar akustycznych. Jest szybko, są i wolne momenty – VARW w takim czy innym wariancie nie zawodzi i czuć tu doświadczenie. Doświadczenie pełne pasji, wręcz maniakalnego oddania się tej sztuce. Surowe wokale, wwiercają się w czaszkę, rwą strzępy resztek rozsądku, totalnie wypluwając z siebie nienawiść do dzisiejszego świata i ludzkiego ścierwa. Świetne partie perkusji, pełne drobnych akcentów na blachach i prostych przejściach, które czynią taką robotę, że niejeden z perkusistów w gatunku chciałby mieć taki feeling i smak gry. Pulsujący bas, wysunięty do przodu i wprawnie podkreślający pracę perkusji to kolejny z elementów układanki kryjącej się pod nazwą VARW. Ten album trzeba mieć i bezsprzecznie słuchać nocą by wydobyć z niego pełnię oferowanych doznań.

It goes without saying that the releases coming out under the banner of Dark Adversary Productions hold a high standard and do not disappoint. The label, managed by the mastermind behind Drwoning the Light, has been ravishing dark hearts with Black Metal art and Dark Ambient rituals for years. VARW is a new project hailing from Australia, whose debut album was released in 2021. The duo consists of Greallach and Balam whom we may associate with the aforementioned Drowning the Light, Pestilential Shadows or Nazxul.
’Wights of the Barrow Fume’ is eight tracks arranged in a well-thought-out sequence and balances in atmosphere between raw, melodic Black Metal and songs arranged exclusively for acoustic guitars. VARW took aim at Celtic mythology and I think that such a treatment with the arrangement of songs into a hard-edged concept came off very, very well. The juxtaposition of the rawness of the songs with the beauty and warm sound of acoustic guitars leaves an incredible impression. It is so intense that it is hard to break away from the material and not listen to it over and over again. What’s more, the strictly Black Metal songs are not devoid of atmosphere. The melodics here evoke tremendous pathos, and we can also find choruses with pure tone of voice. Yet nevertheless, this is an immensely guitar-driven album. In the four tracks of the BM matter we find very good arrangement solutions, soul-embracing melodies referring precisely to the Celtic feeling. Another advantage is the fact that the band didn’t reach for strange folk instruments, and the final effect was achieved only with basic 'metal’ instrumentation. The songs are very dynamically written, you can feel the motorics around which they were created and develop to then transition into wonderful acoustic guitar passages. There are fast, there are also slow moments – VARW in one variant or another does not disappoint and you can feel the experience of the guys in the band. An experience full of passion, even maniacal devotion to the art. Raw vocals, drill into the skull, tear shreds of the remnants of sanity, totally spitting out hatred towards today’s world and human filth. Great drum parts, full of fine touches on the cymbals and simple transitions, which do the kind of job that many drummers in the genre would like to have such a feeling and taste of playing. The pulsating bass, brought forward and skillfully emphasizing the work of the drums, is another of the pieces of the puzzle behind the name VARW. This album is a must have and unquestionably listen nightly to get the full experience offered.
