Jakoś dawno już nie miałem styczności z materiałem norweskiego ORCUSTUS i od kilku dni nosiłem się z zamiarem odświeżenia sobie ich muzyki… i całkiem dobrze, bo do takich materiałów wraca się z przyjemnością. Zespół obecnie zaprzestał swojej działalności, a powstał w 2002 roku. Nazwa kapeli oznaczająca „wewnętrzny krąg piekła, gdzie Lucyfer rezyduje na swoim tronie”, została zasugerowana przez Dirge Rep, a zespół otrzymał zgodę na jej użycie od prawowitego właściciela nazwy, Bård’a „Faust’a” Eithun’a, który wydawał podziemny fanzin o tej samej nazwie na początku lat 90-tych. Spoglądając na dyskografię, można powiedzieć, że jest dość skromna względem stażu, ponieważ znalazł się w niej jeden album, dwie EPki, split oraz materiał kompilacyjny. Za to na samą muzykę nie można narzekać…
Wydany w 2009 roku album 'Orcustus’ to siedem utworów zaklętych w niemal czterdziestu dwóch minutach. Przyglądając się współczesnej norweskiej, black metalowej scenie można mieć nieco mieszane uczucia, ponieważ to, co zachwycało na początku lat dziewięćdziesiątych, to od kilku dobrych lat pozostawia zwykły niesmak. Na przykład można wziąć choćby te zespoły, które zapoczątkowały w tym gatunku. ORCUSTUS jednak odbiega od tego stereotypu i trzyma poziom dawnych lat. Co prawda w muzyce na Orcustus można doszukać się wpływu wielu kapel, jak choćby Darkthrone, 1349, czy Mayhem. Wśród utworów, które złożyły się na ten album nie ma jakiegoś szczególnego, który mógłby stać się bardziej przebojowym. Wszystkie są równe względem siebie. Black metal, jaki kreuje ORCUSTUS jest bardzo klasyczny, agresywny i pozbawiony cukierkowych melodyjek, jakich jest mnóstwo we współczesnej muzyce… i chociaż wspomnianej przed chwilą agresji nie brakuje w którymkolwiek utworze, to równocześnie tworzy się tu bardzo mroczna ale i wciągająca atmosfera, dzięki której ten materiał z pewnością zapadnie w pamięci na bardzo długo. Riffy gitar świetnie odnajdują się w szybkim tremolo, a że produkcja jest przejrzysta, to nie trzeba nadstawiać uszu, by wychwycić każde uderzenie kostką w struny. Kompozycje te perfekcyjnie oddają ducha wczesnych lat dziewięćdziesiątych. Gitara basowa jest doskonale słyszalna. Momentami nieco dudni, ale wcale mi to nie przeszkadza. Perkusja nisko nastrojona świetnie odnajduje się w szybkich tempach, a każde uderzenie brzmi jak zatrzaśnięcie wrót do podziemii. Wokal to black metalowy skrzek, oddający pełnię zła, pierwotnej agresji i mroku. Do takich materiałów wraca się tylko z niekłamaną przyjemnością. Jeżeli jeszcze nie znacie, to koniecznie zapoznajcie się z tym albumem, albo nawet z całą dyskografią. Z pewnością nie będą to stracone chwile.

It’s been a long time since I came into contact with the material of Norwegian ORCUSTUS and for a few days I’ve been thinking about refreshing my taste for their music… And quite well, because one comes back to such materials with pleasure. The band is no longer active, it was formed in 2002. The name of the band, meaning „the inner circle of hell, where Lucifer resides on his throne”, was suggested by Dirge Rep, and the band received permission to use it from the rightful owner of the name, Bård „Faust” Eithun, who was publishing an underground fanzine of the same name in the early 90s. Looking at the discography, one can say that it is quite modest in relation to the seniority, because there is one album, two EPs, a split and compilation material. However, one cannot complain about the music itself…
Released in 2009, 'Orcustus’ is seven songs enchanted in almost forty-two minutes. Taking a look at the contemporary Norwegian black metal scene, one may have somewhat mixed feelings, as what was awe-inspiring in the early nineties, for a good few years now has left a mere distaste. For example, one can take the bands that pioneered the genre. ORCUSTUS, however, differs from this stereotype and keeps the level of former years. Admittedly, in the music on Orcustus one can find the influence of many bands, such as Darkthrone, 1349, or Mayhem. Among the tracks that made up this album, there is no particular one that could have become more of a hit. All of them are equal to each other. Black metal created by ORCUSTUS is very classical, aggressive and devoid of candy melodies, which are plenty in modern music… and although the mentioned before aggression is not missing in any of the tracks, at the same time it creates a very dark but absorbing atmosphere, thanks to which this material will surely stay in your memory for a very long time. Guitar riffs find their way very well in fast tremolo, and since the production is transparent, you don’t have to put your ears to the ground to catch every hit of the pick on the strings. The compositions perfectly capture the spirit of the early nineties. The bass guitar is perfectly audible. Sometimes it rumbles a bit, but I don’t mind it at all. Low-tuned drums are perfect for fast tempos and every hit sounds like slamming the gate to the underworld. The vocal is a black metal screech, conveying the fullness of evil, primal aggression and darkness. To such material one comes back only with unfeigned pleasure. If you don’t know it yet, you should definitely check this album or even the whole discography. It certainly won’t be a lost moment.
