Irlandczycy tego roku nagrali swój debiutancki pełen materiał zatytułowany „Masque”, który został bardzo dobrze odebrany przez gro maniaków w podziemiu. Chciałbym się jednak cofnąć do wydawnictwa poprzedzającego ten album i napisać kilka słów na temat nastepcy dwóch dem, a mianowicie o Epce „The Cursed Travails of the Demeter”. Nie pytajcie czemu, ot po prostu z gdy ukazał się album, często jego odsłuch zaczynam własnie od tej Epki. Materiał zdecydowanie w żaden sposób nie jest pionierem odkrywania czegoś nowego, a wręcz przeciwnie – porusza się wypróbowanymi ścieżkami. Jednakże VIRCOLAC robią to na tyle sprawnie i dobrze, że nie można im zarzucić wtórności czy plagiatu. Poniżej szczegóły.
VIRCOLAC serwuje nam mieszankę Death i Black Metalu jednak z bardzo dużą przewagą tego pierwszego gatunku. Drugiej stylistyki jest tutaj naprawdę niewiele. Pojawia się sporadycznie w niektórych riffach gitarowych, uderzając prostotą i surowością. W 90-95% jednak jest to osadzony w starej szkole Death Metal, na potrzeby stylistyczne VIRCOLAC wykorzystany i przekształcony na bardziej duszne, piekielne wykonanie. Osobiście słyszę w ich twórczości sporo wczesnego Morbid Angel czy nawet Immolation. Jednak, są to elementy, małe pierwiastki układające się w całość tego co możemy usłyszeć w ciągu tych 25-ciu minut. Materiał nie ogranicza się wyłącznie do zduszenia słuchacza w klaustrofobicznych, rzygających ciemnością dźwiękach. W trakcie odsłuchiwania Ep’ki doświadczymy jakby kontrastowania, gdyż momentami pojawią się melodyjne wolniejsze gitary, a to znowu 'Lascivious Cruelty’ dla przykładu zakończy się dźwiękami pianina. 'The Cursed Travails of the Demeter’ jest bardzo przemyślanym aranżacyjnie materiałem, różnorodnym ale zarazem cholernie spójnym. Nawet trochę odstający od pozostałych trzech utworów, zamykający 'Betwixt the Devil and Witches’ wprowadza nas powoli ale z sadystyczną wręcz systematyką w obraz makabry. Ta z kolei, jest obecna przez całość trwania, niestety tylko Ep’ki. Brzmienie, które zostało utrzymane po części w duchu starej szkoły i jednocześnie pozostając bardzo czytelnym, uderza aurą nieprzeniknionej ciemności, mrocznych potworności. Death Metal w aranżacji VIRCOLAC jest raczej średnich temp, ale nie brakuje blastujących partii i zwolnień. Bardzo ciekawie wypadły ponownie wokale, na demach były także dużym atutem. Nie są to typowe growle. To coś pomiędzy opętanymi krzykami wyplutymi z trzewi niczym najgorsza zaraza, a nienawistnym rykiem pogardy. Ciekawostką jest też warstwa liryczna płyty -> główny temat krąży wokół statku 'The Demeter’, którym to Dracula płynął do Anglii.
Ekipa z Dublina już trzecie raz z kolei, wypluła konkretny materiał. Solidny, bardzo dobrze dopracowany Death Metal z domieszką Black Metalu. Szczere granie, które zostało kompletnie pozbawione zbędnych kombinacji i wysiłków by brzmieć nader nowatorsko. Hołd dla starej szkoły został oddany, a VIRCOLAC dorzucił od siebie kilka zgrabnie sformułowanych muzycznie patentów. Warto, cholernie mocna rzecz!

This year the Irishmen recorded their debut full-length entitled „Masque”, which was very well received by the underground maniacs. However, I would like to go back to the release preceding this album and write a few words about the successor of two demos, namely about the EP „The Cursed Travails of the Demeter”. Don’t ask me why, it’s just that when the album came out I often start listening to it from this EP. The material is definitely not in any way a pioneer in discovering something new, on the contrary, it moves along the tried and tested paths. However, VIRCOLAC do it so well and efficiently that they cannot be accused of duplicity or plagiarism. Here are the details.
VIRCOLAC serves us the mixture of Death and Black Metal but with a very big domination of the first one. The second stylistics is really scarce here. It appears sporadically in some guitar riffs, striking with simplicity and rawness. However, 90-95% of it is old school Death Metal set, for the stylistic needs of VIRCOLAC used and transformed into a more soulful, hellish performance. Personally I hear a lot of early Morbid Angel or even Immolation in their work. However, these are the elements, small elements that make up the whole of what we can hear during these 25 minutes. The material is not limited only to suffocate the listener in claustrophobic, puking with darkness sounds. While listening to the EP we will experience a kind of contrast, because at times there will be melodic slower guitars, and then again 'Lascivious Cruelty’ for example will end up with piano sounds. 'The Cursed Travails of the Demeter’ is a very well thought out arrangement, varied but at the same time damn coherent. Even the closing 'Betwixt the Devil and Witches’, which differs a bit from the other three tracks, introduces us slowly but with a sadistic systematic approach to the macabre. This, in turn, is present throughout the whole duration, unfortunately only of the EP. The sound, which was kept partly in the old school spirit and at the same time remaining very clear, strikes with the aura of impenetrable darkness, dark monstrosities. Death Metal in VIRCOLAC’s arrangement is rather medium tempo, but there is no lack of blasting parts and slowdowns. Very interesting are again vocals, on demos they were also a big advantage. They are not typical growls. It’s something between possessed screams spit out from the guts like the worst plague, and hateful roar of contempt. The lyrical layer of the album is also interesting -> the main theme revolves around the ship 'The Demeter’ on which Dracula sailed to England.
For the third time in a row, the team from Dublin has spit out a concrete material. Solid, very well crafted Death Metal with a touch of Black Metal. Honest playing, which was completely devoid of unnecessary combinations and efforts to sound overly innovative. The homage to the old school was paid and VIRCOLAC added some neatly formulated musical patents. It’s worth it, damn strong stuff!
