SAWHILL SACRIFICE – Pimeyteen ja kuolemaan

Egzystujący od 2009 roku SAWHILL SACRIFICE, w drugiej połowie zeszłego roku wydał swój trzeci album. Przyznaję, że dopiero teraz zapoznaję się z ich muzyką. Pierwszy kontakt i jakże znamienny, bo cholera jest tu czego słuchać. Ale powoli, zaraz do tego dojdziemy. Finowie pochodzą z miasteczka Hyvinkää, które leży na południu ich kraju. Miasteczko to podałem nie bez powodu, bo z tej lokalizacji wywodzą się również takie hordy jak Kalmankantaja, Azaghal, Lathspell, Wyrd, Svartkraft, Oath czy Olio Tähtien Takana. Tak więc miasteczko małe, ale z jak bogatą ilością hord / projektów. Z informacji zamieszczonych w internecie odnośnie samego zespołu wynika, że na początku swojej drogi parali się miksturą Black i Thrash Metalu. Obecne oblicze hordy to Black Metal, które jest mocno zakorzenione we wczesnych dniach powstawania norweskiej sceny.

’Pimeyteen ja kuolemaan’ można przetłumaczyć jako 'Ku ciemności i śmierci’. Odzwierciedla to muzykę, którą możemy usłyszeć na trzecim już krążku Finów. Jestem kompletnym abstynentem, gdy mam do czynienia z językiem fińskim. Jednakże, tłumacząc chociaż same tytuły utworów, zauważam że tematyka zarówno kosmosu jak i Satanizmu nie jest hordzie obca. Tytuły takie jak 'Nadchodzi Wojna’, 'Opuszczam Wszechświat’ czy 'Służę Szatanowi’ – mówią same za siebie. Niestety na potrzebę tej recenzji odezwała się we mnie wrodzona leniwość i tekstów utworów, chociaż fragmentów, nie przepisałem w słownik online. Zdjęcia na potrzebę albumu wykonano w lasach (lub ten element został wzbogacony pracą w Photoshopie co w sumie jest mało istotne), a to również pokazuje nawiązanie do tradycji gatunku oraz pokazanie związku z Naturą samej hordy. Przechodząc do muzyki, mamy do czynienia z Black Metalem czerpiącym pełnymi garściami ze starej szkoły, ale także potrafiącym mocno odcisnąć piętno na słuchaczu nieszablonowymi pomysłami. Być może na pierwszy rzut ucha takie zestawienie brzmi jak kolejna porcja papki awangardowej nudy. SAWHILL SACRIFICE na szczęście potrafi tak ułożyć kompozycje, że odbiorca w nawet najbardziej 'dziwnych’ fragmentach trwania albumu nadal siedzi bez ruchu chłonąc ogrom muzyki. To właśnie należy oddać finom, że ich muzyka ma bardzo dużą przestrzeń i dzieje się w niej naprawdę sporo. Tu nawet powtarzalność poszczególnych riffów czy fragmentów utworów nie zakłóca przepastności materiału. Jest w nim ten element, że niemożliwym jest wychwycenie wszystkiego co 'Pimeyteen ja kuolemaan’ oferuje w pierwszym przesłuchaniu. A pomimo owego niebosiężnego rozmachu kompozycji i tak łatwo się przyswaja. Praca gitar w dużej mierze oparta na dualności: mamy i rytmiczną w tle oraz prowadzącą, która nie z rzadka się sięga po partie tremolo – te uderzają pompatycznością budowanej melodyki. I pomimo że nie jestem zwolennikiem czystego brzmienia, tak muszę przyznać, że tutaj zrobiło ono robotę. Triggery na perkusji, dobrze zaakcentowane linie basu, czytelne gitary z charakterystyczną chropowatością i wściekłe, wręcz klasyczne wokale w Black Metalu. Te ostatnie zostały wzbogacone jeszcze o czyste wokalizy, zarówno śpiewane jak i w wersji deklamacji.

Pięćdziesiąt dwie minuty materiału mijają bardzo szybko! Nie sposób się nudzić przy tym materiale, ja właśnie czwarty raz wciskam play. 'Pimeyteen ja kuolemaan’ jest egzemplarycznym materiałem z Finlandii. Wiem, można się uczepić klarownego brzmienia. Jednak aranżacje linii melodycznej utworów wskazują bezpośrednio i wyłącznie na ten kraj. Czekam na kolejną propozycję tej hordy, bo magnetyzm ich Black Metalu po prostu mnie urzekł. Emocje które biją z twórczości SAWHILL SACRIFICE można porównać do skalistego urwiska o które rozbijają się rozszalałe fale żywiołu morskiego. Tyle tylko, że aktywność hordy została już pogrzebana…

SAWHILL SACRIFICE, existing since 2009, released their third album in the second half of last year. I admit that I am only now getting acquainted with their music. First contact, and how telling, because damn there’s something to listen to here. But slowly, we’ll get to that in a moment. The Finns come from a town called Hyvinkää, which lies in the south of their country. I mentioned this town not without a reason, because such bands as Kalmankantaja, Azaghal, Lathspell, Wyrd, Svartkraft, Oath or Olio Tähtien Takana also originate from this location. So a small town, but with what a rich amount of hordes/projects. From the information posted on the internet about the band itself, it seems that at the beginning of their path they were playing a mixture of Black and Thrash Metal. The current face of horde is Black Metal, which is firmly rooted in the early days of the Norwegian scene.

’Pimeyteen ja kuolemaan’ can be translated as 'Towards darkness and death’. This reflects the music we can hear on the Finns’ third album. I am a complete abstainer when it comes to Finnish language. However, translating at least the song titles themselves, I notice that the themes of both cosmos and Satanism are not alien to the horde. Titles like 'War is Coming’, 'Leaving the Universe’ or 'Serving Satan’ – speak for themselves. Unfortunately, for the purpose of this review my innate laziness was called into action and the lyrics of the songs, although fragments, I did not transcribe in the online dictionary. The photos for the album were taken in the woods (or this element was enriched by the work in Photoshop, which is of little importance) and this also shows the reference to the tradition of the genre and showing the connection with Nature of the horde itself. Moving on to the music, we are dealing with Black Metal drawing heavily on the old school, but also able to leave a mark on the listener with unconventional ideas. Perhaps at first glance such a combination sounds like another portion of pap avant-garde boredom. Fortunately, SAWHILL SACRIFICE is able to arrange the compositions in such a way that the recipient, even in the most 'strange’ fragments of the album’s duration, still sits motionless absorbing the vastness of music. It should be given to the Finns that their music has a lot of space and there is a lot going on in it. Even repetitiveness of particular riffs or fragments of tracks doesn’t disturb the vastness of the material. There is an element of it that it’s impossible to grasp everything that 'Pimeyteen ja kuolemaan’ offers at the first hearing. And in spite of this enormous momentum of the composition, it is still easy to assimilate. The work of guitars is largely based on duality: we have a rhythmic one in the background and a leading one, which not infrequently reaches for tremolo parts – these strike with the pompousness of built melodics. And although I am not a fan of clean sound, I have to admit that it did the job here. Triggers on drums, well emphasized bass lines, clear guitars with characteristic roughness and furious, almost classic Black Metal vocals. The latter are further enriched by clean vocalizations, both sung and in the declamation version.

Fifty two minutes of material passes very quickly! It’s impossible to get bored with this material, I just press play for the fourth time. 'Pimeyteen ja kuolemaan’ is an exemplary material from Finland. I know, you can complain about the clear sound. However, the melodic line arrangements of the songs point directly and solely to this country. I’m waiting for the next offer of this horde, because the magnetism of their Black Metal simply captivated me. Emotions which are beating from the works of SAWHILL SACRIFICE can be compared to a rocky cliff, on which raging waves of the sea element are crashing. Only that the activity of the horde has already been buried…
